School Captains' Report

The student leaders have been collaborating with the SRC and the Koori community to discuss possible options for naming the new building. In addition to this, leadership have also been brainstorming and working on renaming the existing three main units so that all of the names have a similar focus and are relevant to the cohorts who are doing the majority of their learning in each building. Some of our ideas involve using native fauna and flora as a focus or the school colours, along with other themes that represent our community and our surrounding geographical areas. The Koori group are in discussions around indigenous names for the buildings. Later this term or early next term a survey will be sent out to the college cohort allowing them to vote in relation to the new names. We will then extend the vote to our parent community.

Morning Meditation

Theo Williams of 8F was kind enough to organise some meditation for everyone during Remote Learning. It was excellent!

The morning meditation woke me up a bit more and helped me feel focused. It made me feel calm and reminded me that it isn't easy being in lock down but meditation can help us feel calmer and relaxed.

Thank you so much Theo – it has made my day!

Wellbeing Garden Project

                                                                              BEFORE

We’ve been discussing ideas for the new well-being garden for quite some time now. Many ideas have been presented that are both environmentally friendly, self-sustaining and are able to provide a safe, calming area for our fellow students. We now are beginning to develop in our minds what the finished product should and could look like. We need to see how it will all fit, how big etc. Like all things in the planning stage, we need to see where our thoughts will lead but here is the overall idea. The idea was to go for a Japanese type of garden, as these are gardens of peace and tranquility with smooth rivers and colourful bridges that would resonate really well with students. Unfortunately, due to the conditions in Melbourne, we are unable to plant any weather tolerable cherry blossom trees, however, we’ve found an alternative in the form of pink flowering trees. Along with that, we also wanted to look into the idea of having a little pond with a colourful bridge.

Now the pond does not have to be water. Tony suggested that we could fill the pond with blue pebbles/stones to give a little water effect, accompanied by a little bridge that students can cross over. As this is a wellbeing garden, of course we will have a little garden area. Tony also told me to look into the Hügelkultur, which may look complicated but is quite simple to do. We would also like to see a little bench area, along with a nice path for students to pass by or even sit down and relax on. As more students continue to return to school, the SRC and student leadership plan to involve students in working during lunchtimes to start cleaning up the area in preparedness to embark on an awesome journey of the new Well-Being Garden.
