Grade 2 Fortnightly Snapshot
Term 2 Weeks 4 and 5
Dear Parents and Carers
It has been an exciting fortnight in Grade 2, where the students have been able to express their creativity in their dioramas for our final task in the current Unit of Inquiry. We are looking forward to starting a new unit next week.
To celebrate Education Week which commences the 24th May, we will be sending home login details for SeeSaw in the coming days. This will give families and friends the opportunity to see what the students have been learning at school and will allow the children to show off the work they are most proud of.
In reading, students will begin learning about the verbs and language to support them in understanding persuasive texts. After reading, they will learn how to use powerful adverbs to convince others to read or not to read the text of their choice. They will revise how to recognise the genre of a book and begin looking specifically at the features of persuasive texts.
In word study, we are learning the five jobs of silent final e.
Learning the codes will help students with their reading and spelling. Here are links to videos where students can see, say and hear the codes.
In writing, we are introducing ways to write persuasively when we want others to see our point of view. Students will learn to write a topic sentence, then their arguments with justification, followed by a concluding paragraph. Students will be provided with some sentence starters and begin to use adverbs of persuasion, such as ‘I wholeheartedly believe …’.
We will revise using the connective ‘because’, use exclamation marks and question marks.
This week we are beginning to learn about addition. The learning intentions are:
• Recalling simple additions facts
• solving addition problems using a range of strategies
To assist with the recalling of addition facts the student will play number games. They will also learn different ways they can solve addition problems (i.e. jump strategy and split strategy).
.
We will be commencing our new Unit of Inquiry, based on the Transdisciplinary Theme ‘How we Organise Ourselves’. Students will be working around the central idea ‘Critical Thinking Supports Informed Choices’ and will learn more about the forms of persuasion and how we are influenced. Students will also learn more about how to give reasons for their choices and communicate these choices with others.
Use the links in this newsletter to go to the codes videos and check the Student Planner for the weekly homework.
Students will need to read their decodable book each night. Mathletics tasks have also been assigned.
