Dorothea Mackellar Poetry Workshop

It’s that time of the year again, when children from all over Australia are writing poetry in preparation for the Annual Dorothea Mackellar Poetry Awards. Last year, over 7 000 entries were submitted from school students all over Australia. The theme this year is “Rich and Rare” and Sacred Heart students were fortunate enough to have Miss Brittany Riley from the Dorothea MacKellar Society visit the school last week to deliver two poetry workshops. Both groups  Year 3-6 and infants, K-2 wrote joint poems by brainstorming ideas and phrases. Primary wrote about Australia and the K-2 students enjoyed creating poetry about the Seasons. Thank you Brittany for giving your time to share your knowledge with us all.

Australia - By Years 3-6

It’s a hot Summer’s day

the ocean is raging.

I’m tending to the BBQ

the snags are spitting on my thongs.

When the sun sets,

We light the campfire.

 We toast our marshmallows,

while we wait for our damper.

Our Aussie wildlife friends scramble to their burrows

as we sing Waltzing Matilda.

Over the hissing of mozzie spray

and crabs scuttle to our bare feet.

As the sun rises at dawn,

the magpies start squawking.

The smell of vegemite wafts to our noses.

Australia is definitely the lucky country!
