From the Principal

Dear Killara Families

Our school is wonderfully busy with exciting learning experiences taking place across all learning disciplines. There have been many events and achievements across the areas of sports, academia, International Duke of Edinburgh Awards, service to the community and students achieving their personal best in their daily learning experiences. Our vision to unleash the potential in every student continues to be the purpose that drives our actions every day, and we look forward to celebrating student achievements in the coming term.

Musical

Our 2021 school musical, Disney’s High School Musical 2 was a success. I thank our staff, students and parents who worked together to produce an outstanding production. I particularly wish to thank all of the students who worked diligently to ensure the musical ran smoothly. Rehearsing lines and attending rehearsals after school and during the school vacation, demonstrated tremendous commitment. A caring and collaborative creative and performing arts community developed amongst students and staff who worked on this musical. It was an educative experience in communication, sound, lighting, drama and community service. There was a wonderful synergy amongst the actors, singers, musicians, technology team and the backstage team, that allowed a professional production of this nature to take place. I thank our teachers Shannon Bryant, Grace Dale, Sunnie Kim, Gabrielle Zolezzi, Ayesha Ghazzawy, Jake Henzler, Jack Currie, David Browne, Tim Collins, Jackie Berry and the many other staff members who embraced and supported this entire experience. Every show was well attended and I thank our Killara community for supporting our hardworking students. It was great to have our community inside our school again and it was fantastic to hear audience members singing “you are the music in me” as they left the show.

Health Advice:

This is a message in relation to the most recent public health alert regarding COVID-19. The purpose of this message is to simply remind our community of the COVID advice from Health NSW. All members of our school community should review the NSW Government COVID-19 news and updates (https://www.nsw.gov.au/covid-19/latest-news-and-updates?deliveryName=DM145511) site for impacted venues and locations and adhere to the advice provided. Students should not attend school if unwell, even with mild symptoms of COVID-19. Any person with any COVID-19 symptoms will be sent home and should not return until they have received a negative test result and are symptom-free. Anyone who is unwell with COVID-19 symptoms is strongly encouraged to get tested and self-isolate until a negative result is received.

Rugby League Achievements

I congratulate our students on their achievements in rugby league. Our team was successful at the recent NRL Katrina Fanning Cup. In the grand final, our students versed Narrabeen Sports High School and won. Mr Peterson and Mr Starling indicated that the team played skilfully and collaborated, demonstrating commitment, resilience and care for each other and their opponents. A high degree of effective teamwork was displayed by these students and our entire school community congratulates them on their fantastic efforts.

Leave requests during school term

From the beginning of 2015, family holidays and travel are no longer considered under the Exemption from School Procedures. Travel outside of a vacation period is now counted as an absence for statistical purposes. Please be aware that any absences not accepted by a Principal will be marked as A – Absent (unexplained/unjustified) on the school’s attendance register. I request that families avoid taking students on holidays during the school term.
