Literary Lights - Wednesday 16th August

What better way to while away a chilly winter afternoon than curling up with a good book? And not just any good book, but a book written by your own child! Now you have that chance. We are formally inviting you to the 2023 Literary Lights event at NLPS on Wednesday 16th August, from 3 – 4:30pm.

Literary Lights is an NLPS tradition that we are so excited to bring back after the last few COVID years. Every student at the school has worked hard this year to produce an amazing story book; they have planned, drafted, edited and revised, published and illustrated their books and are so excited to share them with you.

Between 3pm and 4:30 pm on Wednesday 16th, you are invited to come and find a comfortable spot in your child’s classroom to sit and share their wonderful book with them. The coffee cart will be available on the afternoon, should you want to cosy up with a hot drink. There will also be a selection of students reading aloud extracts from their books in various spots around the school (exact locations tbc).

To fit in with our theme of ‘comfortably curling up with a good book’ we invite students to wear their pyjamas/oodies to school that day if they wish to.

Please note that once the bell goes at 3:30pm, the teachers in the classrooms will be facilitating the event in their room but will not be responsible for supervising individual students. If you are not attending the Literary Lights event your child must follow their normal pick up/after school routine. From 3:30-4:30pm only students who are with their parent/guardian are permitted to stay at school.

Staff Professional Development

Last Friday while most students were enjoying a pupil free day, the staff spent the day exploring STEM through the lens of neurodiversity. Dr Loz and her team from Science Play Kids in Altona showed us so many different and exciting ways we can engage all learners and all different types of brains through inclusive practices.

Science Play Kids has so many different resources, if you are interested you can find more here, https://www.scienceplaykids.com.au/

Book Fair - More Helpers Needed (Especially for Weds 23rd)

During Book Week Newport Lakes Primary School will be holding a Book Fair where students can come in and have the opportunity to purchase a range of Scholastic books if they would like. For this to operate successfully we require the services of some very willing adult helpers. Volunteers will require a current Working with Children's Check and complete the Volunteer/Child Safe and OH&S  Inductions with the front office.

The fair will be open from:

  • 3:30 to 4:00pm Monday 21st August.
  • 8:30am to 8:55am  &  3:30 to 4:00pm  Tuesday 22nd, Wednesday 23rd, Thursday 24th August
  • 8:30am to 8:55am Friday 25th August

If you are able to help out for any of these sessions (especially on Wednesday)  throughout the week, please contact Krissy Barr (Library) with the dates and times you are available.

Happy Reading 😊

National Day of Action against Bullying

Join us as we participate in the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence (NDA) on Friday 18 August 2023

This year, the NDA’s theme is: Growing connections with each other, with our schools and our communities to create positive action for Australia’s key bullying prevention initiative. The NDA is an important day in our school calendar to say ‘Bullying. No Way!’.

Research has shown that a sense of connection to school supports the development of positive social behaviours and decreases the likelihood and negative impacts of bullying. Growing connections helps students feel accepted, respected, included, and supported. The 2023 NDA theme offers an opportunity to increase student connectedness and sense of belonging. Together we can make a change. Everyone has a role to play for bullying prevention.
