RESILIENCE - how do we get it?

I recently attended a ‘Resilient Kids’ conference. There was excellent input by the 4 speakers. I would like to share some of their insights and resources with you.

The speakers were Maggie Dent, Michelle Mitchell, Karen Young and Justin Coulson.

We are all works-in-progress. We never stop learning. We can always keep trying. YET means HOPE.

My definition of resilience: Whatever happens, I will be okay.

Exploring Resilience Day:

On August 8th, I will be providing a time and place for us to consider resilience. Like the Feelings Day, there will be various resources available, plus students can talk with me about this topic. It will run again in Room 8 [2B] between noon and 3.15.

FAMILY HINTS:  Quality Time

Try to organise some time together as a family a few times a week – perhaps three meals a week you could sit down to eat as a family. This will give you all a chance to connect and talk about the important issues, as well as the more fun topics. Ask your children to help you with the chores or to run errands. They may protest but they will feel included in your life rather than being an outsider.

FRIDAY FUN FACT: The longest place name, at 85 letters, is “Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu,” which is in New Zealand. Locals just call it Taumata Hill.

In Memoriam:

A previous GRPS Council President recently died. Her name was Averil Muehlenberg. She was President between 2000-2002 following my time in the role. Her husband spoke at her funeral about how her life was characterised by trust, a wonderful and important quality. A long-term friend told us that ‘her faith got her through’. We knew her from Heathmont PS, when she was also a parent at the school. Heathmont was one of the schools that merged to become Great Ryrie PS. We are thankful to have known, and worked with her.

Contact: If you need to contact me, you can email, phone, or see me on my days at school.
