Term 3 Week 6 - Friday 18th August

Can you believe that we are already half way through the term? We have had a fabulous fortnight, and couldn't be prouder of our amazing preps for being at school for 100 days! Our 100 days celebrations were full of amazing costumes, laughs and plenty of counting to 100! We even had a special visit from Nanna Diggins, Nanna Cohen, Nanna Jacqui, Nanna Caulfield and Nanna Zehra, how lucky are we! ;)

What we are learning:

Phonics (Little Learners Love Literacy)

We have begun our new sounds this week which are e and qu .. We are still chanting “The letter is ____, the sound is ____”. It would be wonderful to continue this at home with the letters r and e. Wecontinue practising ournew heart words which are she, he, we, to do and  was. These are in addition to the other heart words  These are The, My, the,  my and I. We have been improving at finding our heart words in books that we read, calling them treasure!. We are focussing on blending CVC words (constant, vowel, constant) each day. Letters and sounds we have learnt are m,a,s,p,f,b,h,t,i, c,o, n, d, l, v, r and e.

Writing:

Every Monday, we draw and write about what we have done on the weekend, this is called our weekend recount. The students love sharing with their peers, it is so great to hear about the adventures you all go on! We continue to learn how to make sentences by looking at a picture.  We use who, when and where to form the sentence. We have learnt that we can use words like ‘the family’ or ‘the girl’, if we don't know the person in the picture’s name.

Reading

We continue to have a weekly mentor text in reading. This fortnight we have continued to enjoy the nursery rhymes.  Each day we have a different focus, asking and answering questions, rhyming words, providing feedback and creating sentences using the words from our word wall. Both classes have been enjoying acting out the correct sequence of the nursery rhymes that we learn. This fortnight we have been focussing on ‘Incy Wincy spider’ and ‘Hey diddle diddle’.

Maths:

In maths we have been learning subtraction and addition. We are using a range of things to help us figure out addition and subtraction problems, like our fingers, blocks and counters! We begun by learning how to find one more and one less than a number, and we are now able to begin to use our fabulous addition and subtraction skills.

Leader In Me:

We have continuously been using 7 Habit languages when we are in class and out in the yard. This week we have been focussing on being a kind and respectful friend, and to Seek first to understand, then to be understood.

Inquiry

We have begun our new topic of living things and life cycles. As our plants continue to grow, we have looked at the life cycle of a butterfly. The students have created beautiful butterfly life cycles! We are now beginning to look at the life cycle of a frog.

Important reminders

*Please continue to check the blue pouches nightly, as we use these to send notices home.

* We have begun sending home one decodable book per student per week. Students can only borrow a book if they bring their blue satchel. Please see our compass post for more information.

* A number of children are coming to school without a jumper. Please be sure to pack a school jumper for your child when playing outside at recess and lunchtime.

* We are finding that some jumpers are being taken home with the wrong name on it. If you could please check your child's jumper to ensure it has their name on it, that would be fantastic!

*Please ensure that your child has a substantial lunch such as a sandwich/roll/wrap or thermos for example for lunch along with a snack (cracker/yoghurt) and fruit or vegetables.

*Daily we have a fruit break, we kindly ask that you please pack your child a piece of fruit or a vegetable to snack on during this time.

*Please have your child’s drink bottle filled with water only.
