Visual Arts

Over the past two weeks in Visual Arts, Foundation students completed their ‘Shape City’ collage. They were introduced to paper construction, where they were inspired to make a 3D paper sculpture. Foundation students had fun learning how to manipulate paper by tearing, cutting, folding, twisting, curling, fringing, bending, looping, rolling, fan folding (zigzag) and accordion folding to help them create their 3D paper sculpture. Year 1/2 students started learning about construction by first looking at all the various materials, then drawing and labelling a plan of their ‘Mini Chick Treehouse.’ Once happy with their plan they were able to choose their cardboard base. Students learnt attaching techniques when using a cardboard cylinder (tube) and various other materials. They were required to have two levels and they could add extra features such as stairs, swings, trees, grass, a pool, feeder bowls and more. Year 3/4 students were introduced to construction too, where they were inspired by the ‘Steampunk’ art movement to make a ‘Steampunk Robot’. Students first looked at various images of ‘Steampunk’ sculptures, where they noticed they were metallic, industrial robot like. Students then planned by drawing and labelling their ideas. During the construction phase students learnt various joining and attaching techniques. Some students were able to start painting their robots using darker and lighter brown shades. Year 5/6 students were inspired to create a 3D Keith Haring character, by firstly manipulating wire to make a head, arms, body and legs which made their armature. They then wrapped foil over their armature wire to give their character shape and body. Students then were able to use ripped paper strips to place in a paper mâché, glue, plaster powder mixture, where they continued to wrap around their foil character.

PE

Over the past two weeks in PE students have continued to participate in the Aerosports program which is a high energy sports/dance program. Students are learning different dance moves to music and this week we started to think about the beats of the music and the timing of the moves. Each lesson also included the introduction and development of gymnastics skills. These skills work on body strength and movements which assists in the Aerosports program.

It has been great to see the excitement of all students during this high energy program and the development of their skills.

Health

Over the past two weeks students from Prep to year 4 have been working on problem solving and help seeking strategies. They have been thinking about problems they have each day at school or at home and how to manage these problems. Also they have identified people both at school or at home could help them work through their problems.

Students in years 5 and 6 have had a nurse from the Department come to present on Sexual health. This included talking about puberty and the changes that these students are going through or will go through over the next few years. It also included a look at male and female reproductive systems.

The feedback that our school received from the Nurse was fantastic, saying that all students were very respectful and engaging, asking great questions. We are very proud of their efforts during these lessons.

VIS Community Programs Be Fit. Be Well

Tom Afonczenko (Taekwondo)

Last week we had a special guest presenter Tom Afonczenko, an athlete from the VIS and the number one Taekwondo athlete in Australia. He cane and spoke to our year 3-6 students about his journey as an elite athlete and his hopes and dreams of winning an Olympic Gold Medal next year. It was great to have Tom at our school and our students were very excited and engaged with his presentation. Tom was such a nice man, and we will eagerly follow him next year at the Olympics.

House Athletics

This week we held our house athletics down at Mentone Athletics Track.

Even though it was a brisk morning the weather was beautiful and it was a great day. All students in the school hopped on a bus first thing in the morning and made it down to the track by 9.40am.

The events started at 10am with all students having a go at 100m, discus, shot put, long jump, triple jump and high jump.

Everyone loved the day and tried really hard. At the end of these events, we ran some 200m races, relay races against the teachers and a final race between some teachers and the school captains.

It was a great day, I would love to thank all the staff of Le Page for their help on the day, and all of our parent volunteers for their help and other parents for coming and supporting your child and our school.

From this day, students who have turned 9 or are turning 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 were selected to represent our school at the district athletics day next Tuesday 22nd August. We have a team of 35 students participating on the day and we wish them all the very best for this day.

Library News

Dear parents, carers, and families,

Book Week starts next Monday, the 21st of August, and will be celebrated all week. The theme is "READ, GROW, INSPIRE". This is a time for everybody to enjoy what books have to offer. Make sure you find some time to read books with your children at home or encourage them to read by themselves.

At school, we will have various activities and events planned. Thursday, the 24th of August, is our Book Week Dress Up Day at which students and staff are encouraged to come dressed up as their favourite book character. Additionally, every recess of Book Week, two of our library leaders will be reading one of the Children's Book Council Australia shortlisted picture story books in the library to any student that might want to come along to listen.

Lastly, a story writing competition will be held in all classes throughout the week, and teachers will be organising their own book centred activities in the classrooms.

If you are interested to see which books are shortlisted by the CBCA this year, just follow this link: https://cbca.org.au/shortlist-2023Thank you so much for your support, and keep on reading!
