Sustainability

Kitchen Garden program

The year 2 students had glorious sunshine for their kitchen garden experience this week. Taking advantage of this sunshine we went on a walk to gather leaves from different plants around our yard. In particular we were searching for leaves with well defined vein systems to help the students understand how water and nutrients are transported up to nourish the plant via the vein system.  We then rubbed crayon and pencil over the leaves onto paper and will use these images to cut out and paste on to cardboard to create a leafy bookmark.

Our cooking involved making fried rice using a variety of vegetables and using bok choy harvested from our own vegetable garden. Students learnt to slice and dice to make nice fried rice!! It is really wonderful when so many students are willing to have a taste even though they fear they may not like the food - many are pleasantly surprised. Students are encouraged to have a taste but understand if they do not like it, the chickens will always eat the leftovers!!

Year 4PD had a kitchen garden session this week making pizza pinwheels using pastry as the base and adding pizza ingredients, including rocket from our garden bed,  then rolling the pastry and cutting wheels to make a delicious treat. A walk around the school gardens provided information on how to make use of the spaces, identifying native plants already flourishing in our school, and planning where to plant our new natives to be donated from Bunnings this week.

Garden helpers

Two of our garden helpers from year 4 - Lara and Talia, were supported by some of our Prep students planting pansy seedlings into the junior school garden bed outside 1M. We thank these students for their efforts during their break time and hope we can soon enjoy the beautiful colours of the petals as the flowers grow. With this warm weather it may not be too long before we see lots of colour.

Bunnings Donation for Tree Day

Our local Bunnings in Scoresby kindly donated 30 native tube stock  for our school. We are very grateful to Bunnings Scoresby for their generosity in supporting us. We will be planting over the next week in areas of our school that the year 4 students have scoped our during their kitchen garden experience.
