From the Principal

Mr Torpey

St Justin’s Primary School acknowledges the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as Australia's First People and Traditional Custodians of the land and waterways on which our school stands.

We pay our respects to the Bunurong people of the Kulin Nation, and their elders past and present, as we continue to proudly live and learn on their land.

Dear Families and Friends,

100 Days of Learning at St Justin's

Today Preps celebrated 100 days of learning at St Justin's. On arrival, you could be excused for thinking that we were celebrating Super Hero Day, as some of our Preps and their teachers had dressed as Disney and Marvel characters to coincide with Disney's 100 Year Celebration. While other Prep students dressed up as if they were 100 years old.

It was wonderful to see so many parents and grandparents gathered to the PAC  for the Prep Assembly.

Following our whole school presentation, our Preps participated in a number of “100” activities – a great day had by all. A BIG thank you to our four Prep teachers for organising a memorable day for our students.

Thanks to the Preps (and their families) for being a wonderful part of our community. We’re really glad that you’re here.

Saint Mary MacKillop - Feast Day 8th August

Students will celebrate a special liturgy on Tuesday in honour of Saint Mary MacKillop. Some of our Year 6 students will lead the liturgy in the classrooms.

Mary MacKillop was born in Melbourne, Victoria on 15th January 1842.  She was the eldest of eight children. Her father Alexander and mother Flora were both born in Scotland.

Mary had a very poor and unsettled childhood as her father was often without a steady job. Her family had to move from place to place whilst he looked for work. With all this moving around, Mary had little formal schooling but instead was given homeschooling by her loving father. Alexander MacKillop not only taught his children their school work but also passed on the wonderful lessons of faith. This not only provided the children with a great education but instilled a passion in them to perform the work of Jesus. This passion ultimately drove Mary to become a nun. (continued in Education in Faith)

St Mary of the Cross MacKillop Prayer:

Heavenly Father,

Thank you for Mary MacKillop and what she has taught us about loving and helping others.

I pray that you can help me to have a heart of compassion for those in need.

Please show me how to meet the practical needs of others.

Jesus help us.

Amen

Onsite Parking

A reminder that parents should not be driving into the school grounds to drop off or pick up students (Camp Australia drop off and pick up excepted). If someone else drops off or picks up your child – please pass this information on to them. We appreciate your support in this matter and the importance of keeping all our school community safe.

Early Arrivals

Please be aware that supervision of students commences at 8:40 am and concludes at 3:45 pm. Students should not be left at school outside of these hours, unless previous arrangements have been made. Usually staff are here well and truly outside of these hours, but they often have other commitments – meetings, planning, etc. I would hate for any child to be left here unsupervised. If you are running late, please don’t hesitate to let us know. If you require supervision outside of these hours, please contact Camp Australia.

Student Code of Conduct Form

It is now a requirement from MACS (Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools) that all students who attend a Catholic school complete the Students Code of Conduct. Our prep families have already completed this form.

Staff will go through this form with the Year 1 to Year 6 students and clearly explain the expectations of  acceptable and unacceptable behaviours at school. Students will need to sign this document and bring it home for parents/guardians to read over and also sign and date.

This document ensure that students, parents/guardians and teaching staff all have the same understanding of the expectations around being enrolled in a Catholic School.

All Code of Conduct forms need to be returned to the classroom teacher one week after the form has been sent home.

We appreciate your cooperation in regards to the initiative that has been implemented by MACS.

School Fees

A reminder that all School Fees are due to be finalised by Tuesday 31st October.

As is our ongoing practice, should any family’s financial situation have changed, please contact Patrick Torpey or office staff on 9561 7644 or email office@sjwheelershill.catholic.edu.au

Volunteering at St Justin’s

If you wish to volunteer your services at St Justin’s (we would love to have you), please complete the forms which are available on our website, under the Child Safety tab.

It is now a requirement from MACS (Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools) that all volunteers need to have a list of processes and documents that must be completed.

All families who currently volunteer and  have outstanding documents will receive these in their students school bags to be filled out, signed and returned to the office.

We appreciate your cooperation in regards to the initiative that has been implemented by MACS.

For your interview, please ring the school office to make a time.

Where's  Mr T

Can you find Mr T? He's hiding somewhere in the newsletter.

School Crossing Reminder

A friendly reminder to please follow the safe road crossing procedure when at the School Crossing.

STOP, LOOK, LISTEN and THINK.

  • STOP one step back from the kerb or shoulder of the road if there is no footpath.
  • LOOK in all directions for approaching traffic.
  • LISTEN in all directions for approaching traffic.
  • THINK about whether it is safe to cross the road – when the road is clear or all traffic has stopped.

Have a great weekend and we look forward to seeing you all next week.

Kind regards,

Mr Patrick Torpey
