Year 8 Religion: Ways People Pray

“Prayer is a burst from my heart, it is a simple glance thrown toward Heaven, a cry of thanksgiving and love in times of trial as well as in times of joy." St Therese of the Child Jesus’ definition is one of many from a cloud of witnesses to the central place of prayer in our lives.

If Jesus prays, then we must find in prayer a means of fulfilling all our human desires. Indeed, Jesus, the Divine Word of God, is found many times in the pages of the Gospels deep in prayer. When we follow His example, our lives are elevated to the supernatural, even into the inner life of the Holy Trinity where the three Divine Persons exist in an eternal and unbroken state of contemplation of each other.

By praying in the community, we foster greater unity in our community. This is because we unite under one law of God’s love. Our uniqueness and individuality need not be the source of disagreement. While there are infinite things that we can find irritating or disagreeable about other people, if we are made by God, then our differences ought to be a source of wonder and awe. How great is God that He has made all this diversity to coexist.

Year 8 classes have been invited over the past few weeks to attend a Liturgy of the Word and meditation on Jesus’ prayer "that we may all be one" (Jn 17:20-26). It has been a really positive experience to be in each other’s company in the Mount Erin Chapel which was built more than a hundred years ago for this purpose…to unite the school community through communal prayer.
