5 Reasons why students should read books

"Why bother reading books?"

"What are books going to do for you with all the time your pour into them?"

Quite a lot actually! Here are five essential reasons why you should be reading.

  1. Reading expands vocabulary | Regular reading exposes students to numerous writing styles. Students become exposed to proper grammar and while looking at the words, their minds are able to comprehend and store the information. Even when they come across new words that they don’t understand, students absorb something from the context that may help deepen the understanding of the text next time it is encountered.
  2. Reading boosts creativity | Reading fiction increases creativity and creativity can help solve problems, produce music and spark innovation. Being able to write creatively is highly beneficial at school.
  3. Reading improves writing skills | With an improved vocabulary and increase of creativity, students have the advantage of producing exceptional written work. While reading, students unconsciously absorb the grammar and writing style of the author.
  4. Reading develops analytical thinking skills | Reading enhances knowledge by exercising the brain and making it think more, therefore enhancing intelligence. This makes it easier to study, as knowledge received through reading is retained. Studies show that reading enhances analytical thinking, as readers are able to spot patterns faster than non-readers.
  5. Reading enhances memory | Memory and reading are closely linked. Regular reading requires the brain to remember details, plots, themes, characters and facts and figures, thus improving memory by stretching the brain’s memory muscles

Overdue Books

Just a reminder that Library loans are for 2 weeks after which students must renew or return their book. Students receive automated emails from our library system two days before, then Day 3 and 14 on becoming overdue and regularly after that.

When books are overdue for long periods of time (months) library staff email parents directly via Compass. We do not charge overdue fines, however long overdue books will incur a replacement fee if not returned.  Parents will receive two warnings and an invoice notification before any charges are added to their school account.
