CELEBRATING ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE@CSPS

Year 1 and 2 News

Maths

In year 1 and 2 our focus this term has been on number sense and understanding place value. We have been learning lots of new maths games while also using manipulatives and concrete materials to make and order different numbers. We have also been using number lines to show a numbers value in relation to other numbers around it.

Guided Inquiry

In Year 1&2, we have been exploring the concept of Rights and Responsibilities within our Guided inquiry unit focusing on caring for our environment. The statement underpinning our inquiry is, “Everyone has a responsibility to make the right decision and take action to care for and protect our environment”. Earlier in the term, we collected rubbish from the yard and audited it to see how much of it could have been recycled.  We collected a lot of rubbish and our Sustainability and Environment Team representatives spoke at an assembly to remind students to not litter. We also created and put posters around the school to remind of the importance of not littering and caring for our environment. To support our discussion and learning about recycling and reusing students designed and created an item of choice using recyclables.

RACV Safety Squad Visit

On Friday 18th March, we had a visit from Rebekah, our RACV Safety Squad educator. She helped students from Foundation, Year 1 and Year 2 understand how to keep safe at home and whilst out on the roads; walking, riding bikes and scooters and as passengers in cars.

Rebekah came armed with engaging and interactive activities for the students to participate in and everyone went home with a reflective bag tag to help them be seen on the roads. Each classroom also received a measurement chart so students can see how tall they are as Rebekah also explained what happens when airbags are deployed in the front seat and you are not 145cm tall yet.
