Year Four

Welcome Back Year 4

We welcomed the Year 4 students back onsite on Tuesday. They were greeted with balloons, smiling faces and sunshine!

We were very proud of how the students transitioned and how they had a thirst for ‘real life’ instruction. Never have the classrooms been so quiet when the teachers were explaining a concept in the flesh! Children have adapted like champions to masks and they are looking after them well – congratulations year 4’s! We are very grateful and feel lucky to have all children back together again.

Our Inquiry Unit is in full swing and includes a multi-faceted project made up of  number of parts that students are working through, including:

  • A persuasive piece about BNPS
  • A print media advertisement of BNPS
  • A jingle
  • A slogan
  • And finally a 30sec filmed advertisement.

We are mindful of the importance of children’s social and emotional development and how during Remote Learning this has been harder to develop. As such, we are participating in lots of group work and game based activities in the classroom so children can reconnect and continue to develop peer relationships. These inquiry activities are group based and children are gradually remembering how to cooperate, compromise and consider other points of view whilst working towards a common goal.

Friendly Game Of Rounders

Speaking of game based activities, the Year 4’s have been outside for their weekly rounders game – a special request from a number of students for when we were back onsite. It was a competitive match and we look forward to continuing to improve our skills, team work and sportsmanship over the term.

Maths focus is fractions and the teachers are very happy to be back teaching this in the classroom. We are able to use concrete aids, tune into children’s misunderstandings and model this with some real life objects and materials. We encourage you to continue their application of fractions at home linking it to everyday experiences like, cooking, eating pizza and fruit (!) and reinforcing how fractions are just “a part of a whole”.

We will continue to take students outside as often as possible for health and safety. Over the past two days children have been outside for brain breaks and group work where possible and we’ve been lucky that the weather has been kind to us.

We look forward to having all students back onsite on Monday 1 November and then again from 3 November, breaking for Melbourne Cup Day on the 2 November.
