Year 2 News

Welcome Back Year 2

Last Thursday 21 October we welcomed our Year Two students back onsite and into the classroom. The entrance gate and classrooms were decorated with balloons and each student received a certificate of excellence along with a chocolate frog for all their hard work and perseverance during our online sessions.

The classrooms were a buzz with excitement and the joy experience by all was contagious. The first day back was spent reconnecting with friends and teachers with the inclusion of a science experiment and circle time discussion.

The teachers were so very proud of the resilience the Year two students have shown during this time of transition from Remote Learning to onsite. Well done Year 2!

Literacy

The students have been enjoying learning about paragraphs using the TIpTOP method.

The students have learnt when you change TIME, PERSON, TOPIC or PLACE, you begin a new paragraph. The students wrote three paragraphs about Beaumaris North Primary School and this week they enjoyed writing three paragraphs about their favourite things. There were paragraphs about Christmas, birthdays, ice-cream, chocolate, family, puppies and holidays.

This week the students also enjoyed writing a postcard to their teachers telling them what they are looking forward to about coming to school full time.

Maths

Last week we finished our work on fractions with lots of fun activities such as using different sized lego bricks to show the fractions one-half, (such as two eight pieces equalled one sixteen piece) one quarter and one eighth. We made delicious pizzas and put our ingredients on certain fractional parts such as tomato paste on the whole and ham on half of the pizza. We then also cut our pizzas into ½, ¼ or 1/8 and shared it with our family members. Back at school we made a pizza poster showing how we put our ingredients on a pizza that was cut into eighths.

For 3D shapes we went on a scavenger hunt and looked for things around our house that matched the clues given.

This week we are starting mapping and are going to look at the area surrounding our house on google maps and record important landmarks nearby. We will be using directional language such as forward, backwards, left and right for coding.

Inquiry

How the World Works

The students have thoroughly enjoyed our new Unit of Inquiry. Last week we looked a buoyancy and why some items floats and others sink. We conducted an experiment online with three glasses of water and an egg. The first glass had plain water in it. When the egg was placed in the glass it sank. The second and third glasses had varying amounts of salt in them. When the egg was placed in these glasses it floated and different heights, proving the more salt in the water, the greater the buoyancy.

This week we are looking at gravity. The students watched a video of an astronaut giving a tour around a space station. They learnt how they sleep, eat, go to the bathroom and move around the cabin. This Thursday we will be making cardboard marble runs to test the theory of gravity. The students are very excited.

We are looking forward to welcoming our students back full time from Monday 1 November. Thank you once again to our wonderful parents for your ongoing support throughout Remote Learning.
