Year 11 Pilgrimage
On the 3 October, 31 Year 11 pilgrims and four members of staff set off on a journey that would change our lives. The friendships we built, the Indigenous culture we learned about, and the challenges we endured made us stronger as individuals and bond as a group.
After meeting up with the team from Red Earth and seeing the jumping crocodiles, we stayed our first night at the Aboriginal community Banatjarl (four hours southeast of Darwin). We learned how to make bush medicine and participated in men’s and women’s business. It was at this community where we bonded with little kids and formed relationships we will never forget. The second community we stayed at was called Mengen, where we listened to dreamtime stories spoken by Yidumduma Bill Harney (a Traditional Owner) and explored the bush, looking at rock art. To end the wonderful trip we went on a gorge tour in Nitmiluk National Park.
The pilgrimage provided us with an insight into the oldest living culture in the world and helped to challenge stereotypes. The program, with daily reflections and prayer made everyone very grateful for what they have (especially air-conditioners), provided us with an opportunity to find God in all things and develop new friendships.
We are very grateful for the support of Ms Tripi, Ms Hurley, Ms Alexander, and Mr Bostelman for giving up their holidays and joining us on our pilgrimage.

Year 8 HASS
Year 8 was beset with chivalry and feudalism this week as Mr Sharp’s HASS class simulated medieval society. Students were randomly assigned roles – to represent how people were born into their social classes – and various activities were performed to represent the inter-relationships between the classes. For example, if a manor’s serfs weren’t able to produce enough grain, they weren’t able to secure the services of Knights to protect them from Viking invasions.
Firstly, there was a coronation to appoint Queen Madison to the throne. She enjoyed her privileges and established her Noble Lords, after they pledged their allegiance. Each Lord was put in charge of their respective manors and avowed their authority over the serfs.
If the manor hadn’t secured the protection of Knights they were vulnerable to attacks. Lord Darcy found this out the hard way. “We were strong in our hearts but, when Vikings attack, the sword reigns supreme. Despite some creative evasive action, my manor was pillaged and destroyed,” he said.
This was a fun way of experiencing the social systems of the Middle Ages. Lord Caleb sums it up quite well –
“The coronation was all fancy, but I had to bow down to that filthy imposter of a queen, she does not deserve the power. I should have been king. Well, she obviously sent me to the manor with the most rebellious serfs to not let my power grow too much because she knew I deserved it most. The knights were a necessary but expensive prevention method but the viking attacks allowed me to take a bit more power to reach my goal. Just because she was the closest relative doesn’t mean she should rule and I will fix that since I am most suitable.”

Sustainability Scholarship
Initiated by former staff member Dr Margaret Yoon in 2011 and made possible by her ongoing financial support, the Scholarship was designed to inspire and support students who wanted to pursue tertiary studies in the area of sustainability and the environment. T
This year it was pleasing to see a growing number of students apply for the scholarship. Due to the increased number and quality of applications, it was decided that as well as awarding the Scholarship, a second and third prize would be awarded to the successful students. We would like to thank John XXIII College Foundation for funding these prizes.

SPORT
Sports Awards Night
On Tuesday 19 October we celebrated the sporting achievements of our secondary students. It was an outstanding night where all students involved are to be commended for their exceptional representation of Sport. Thank you to our compere for the evening, Mr Glenn Mitchell, for once again enhancing the wonderful night. We were delighted to have Blair Evans, dual Olympian in swimming for providing inspirational messages to our students. Other highlights of the evening included a panel allowing for student reflection of our year in sport, and a special video celebrating students who have represented WA at a State Sporting level.
Congratulations to all the students on their fabulous achievements and sporting participation throughout an amazing year of sport.
Congratulations
Congratulations to Taj Dorrington, Joshua McGlew and Elijah Zuvela on being selected in the 2021 State Under 13 Boys Hockey Team. Unfortunately, due to COVID, they will miss travelling to Tasmania to represent the state. Instead, they will be playing a series of games in November against Perth Thundersticks Under 14 Academy teams.
Congratulations also to Mahalia Upton (Year 8) who has been selected in the WA Cricket Youth Academy for girls ages 12-16 years. She has been selected to be a part of the Pace Bowling group. This was based on achievements from previous performances in several different WACA run talent events. Well done Mahalia.
Further congratulations to Nic Silva and Luke Carrello who made the East Fremantle Sharks Development Squad for U14’s. Both boys were selected in the A team that defeated the South Fremantle Bulldogs A team last Saturday at Fremantle Oval by 13 points.
