Narartives, Maths and Mappen

We are so excited to welcome back Jasmine and Emily to school this week.  We have missed being a whole class and it was fantastic to be together again. We made a special sign to make Jasmine and Emily feel special as they entered the classroom.

This Term we have begun our writing genre of narratives with fairytales.  The main purpose of the narrative genre is to entertain through storytelling and to engage the reader in an imaginative experience.

We are focusing on fairytales and we are doing a different fairytale each week. We started with Cinderella and then Little Red Riding Hood.  We are exploring how to retell a story making sure we include the characters, setting, a complication and a resolution.

There is often a lesson or moral to be learnt from the story. Through this genre we have learnt about adjectives (big, bad) and nouns (wolf) and singular and plural.

We have learnt about sequencing and that narrative writing includes a beginning, a middle and an ending.

We have also learnt that an important element of narratives is their characters. We have made a wall to display the characters from the fairytales we are learning about. We are adding to our wall as we explore each fairytale.

We created a Little Red Riding Hood craft and we also made Cinderella in her pumpkin coach.

In Maths, over the last couple of weeks we have been revising the concepts learnt over the year. We have revised addition, subtraction, graphing and even how to read a map using grid reference points.

We completed an ‘ice-cream addition’ maths activity where we used stickers to represent ice-cream scoops to find the answers to our addition questions.

Little Red Riding Hood also helped us to make 10 using her basket of flowers to find the missing number in the addition sum.

We also used the characters for Little Red Riding Hood to create a graph.

We then completed a Grid Map, finding the location of the characters using the number and letter axis.

We also did a number maze, helping Little Red Riding Hood find her way through the forest to reach Grandma’s cottage.

In Inquiry this Term is all about connections. We are learning about different animal features and what they need to live.

We started off creating an imaginary animal by combining body parts of two different animals to make a new animal, we then made up a new name for our  creature. For example, see our kangalion below.

Jasmine created a hybrid of a sheep and a giraffe.

Another activity was sorting the animals into alphabetical order. We had a different animal for each letter. We learnt about a new animal called a Xiphias.

We also enjoyed learning about Milton's adventures over the holidays.

Kind regards
