Welcome Back
Welcome back to Term 4! I trust that you all had an enjoyable break and got to spend some quality family time together. It was delightful to see the students in their classrooms and the playground this week full of energy and enthusiasm. The staff and I look forward to an exciting term ahead.
Uniform Reminders
Thank you for ensuring that students abide by the College uniform requirements. Some reminders are:
- HATS are needed for Term 4 (or no play).
- Parkas are only to be worn over jumpers and blazers during Term 2 and 3, so no parkas in Term 4.
- Students must wear their blazers to and from school, unless 25 degrees or over.
Wellbeing Week
This week the College highlighted 'Wellbeing Awareness'. It is important to look after both our physical and mental wellbeing as it contributes to a happy and healthy life. At Assembly, students were encouraged to focus on five things to enhance wellbeing: connecting with others, being active, giving to others, taking notice of things around you and to keep learning.
Several activities were on offer to promote wellbeing. Here are a few that Cumberland students could choose to attend:
- Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday Lunchtime - Wellbeing stories in the Library
- All Week - Small Change Challenge
- Wednesday - DJ and music for students in Lower Plaza - Lunchtime
- Friday 7.30pm - Aitken Can Dance talent and variety show
- Sunday 2.00 - 4.00pm - Combined Choirs Concert (gold coin donation)
Orienteering
The Cumberland students had so much fun on the last day of Term 3, participating in the orienteering competition organised by the PE Department. Students developed many skills while preparing for the competition.
Orientating a map involves being able to understand direction, symbols, scale, line features, colours and terrain. Orienteering also involves an enormous amount of team work and co-operation. During Assembly this week, the winners of the competition were announced (will be published in the next newsletter). Congratulations to all students for their hard work, enthusiasm and participation in this exciting and challenging event! Also, a big thank you to Mrs Dowling, Mrs Wachter and the PE Team for providing this experience for our students.
It was exciting waiting to start! When Jenk and I got told we could go, we went straight for the markers we knew! Then we went over the road going to the ones in that area. Our mission was to find the check points as quick as we could. I tried to remember the ones I found while training in sport. We ended up coming 4th in the Year 4 boys. Overall, I loved district orienteering and I would do it again!

Orienteering is a fun sport that everybody will enjoy, trust me! The aim of this sport is to find these two letters that are on a square, half of it is orange and the other half is white. The other aim is to run fast! When we do orienteering we have a sheet that has a number, clue and answering box on it. First, let’s start with the number. The number that’s on your map will be the one you have to find. For example, if my number is 2, I will have to find it on my map and go to the 2 letter square. But, before you go to it you have to find the clue on your sheet. For example, if it said ‘sleeper wall’, I will need to find the 2 letter square on a sleeper wall. So, when I find it, I’ll have to write it down. For example, RT is one of them. You have to follow the map and work together to find all of the clues. At our school if you come 1st, 2nd or 3rd you’ll get a ribbon; 1st is blue, 2nd is red and 3rd is green at our school. If you make it in tryouts at lunchtime then you make it to a new level. You’ll be going to district orienteering! Now it’s your turn, give it a try! Remember, find them all correctly and be fast and you’ll earn a ribbon if you’re in our school. Parents, not too sure about you; if you guys try but you might like it too! Now you know everything, now do what I say!

History Enrichment Program Passion Project
Alex and Suveer from Year 6 had the opportunity to present their History Passion Project to a panel of experienced teachers and professional historians.
A very big thank you to Mrs Di Martino, Head of Faculty, Extension Programs at the College, who guided their learning and provided this feedback to Alex and Suveer.
“Alex and Suveer did an amazing job presenting their project on ‘Significant Historical Events’. They showed a deep knowledge of the subject and were extremely confident answering questions at the end. The panel were impressed with their polished presentation and their ability to apply their inquiry and critical thinking skills. The panel said that the boys presented like true historians, and invited them to take part in the National History Challenge and Historical Fiction Challenge next year! This put smiles on everyone’s faces.”
I had fun during the History Enrichment Program; putting a presentation together, using a model, and going to my friend’s house. It was a challenging experience, requiring me to think creatively, and I feel that I learnt from it. Looking back on it now, I feel that it was one of the best challenges I have taken on so far.

On Tuesday 8 October, Alexander and I, from Year 6, represented Aitken College in the History Enrichment Program 2019. We presented our history passion project ‘Significant Historical Events ‘at the HTAV in the Collingwood office. This was an amazing experience as we presented in front of real historians, Dr Jo Clyne and Myra Karantzas. We discussed why we are so passionate about history and what historical topics interest us. They asked us impromptu questions and we learnt new facts on the day. All in all, it was day to remember and I would like many more of those.
