Year 8 Systems Technology

Our Year 8 Systems Technology students have had a great start to their new rotations for Term 2. The students have begun looking at Electronic Waste to learn about its impacts on the environment and human health as well as their current use of technology. Our students have been conducting a research task and have created some very informative posters to display their knowledge. Check them out!

Year 10 Art

Year 10 Art have been creative again! This time, we completed our Printmaking unit. These photos show our class using the printing presses to print out their images for their dry-point etchings based on the artworks of graphic artist M.C. Escher.

We used etching tools to etch (scratch) into thick acetate (we used acetate as our “matrix” but traditionally we would have used metal plates). We applied etching ink into the acetate so the etched grooves were filled, which is a printmaking technique known as “intaglio”. We then wiped away the excess ink with soft cloths, and put our special paper and our acetate matrix onto the printing press for printing.

M.C. Escher was a Dutch graphic artist best known for his optical illusions and mathematically-inspired images that can bend your mind! For this task, we looked at Escher’s tessellations, with students either copying his designs or making their own tessellations.

I am so proud of these student artists! Their etchings turned out beautifully.

VCE Systems Engineering & Product Design Excursion

On Thursday 4 May, we took students from the Year 11 & 12 VCE Systems Engineering and Product Design classes on an excursion into the City. We started the day with a talk from Dr Charlie Ranscombe, a Product Design Engineer at Swinburne University, before having some time to explore the Top Designs exhibition at Melbourne Museum and see some of the excellent project and folio work from a range of VCE and VCE VET design subjects.

Following a walk from the Museum into Swanston Street, students had some time to get lunch around the CBD. In the afternoon, we met back at Metro Tunnel HQ, where students were split into two groups, with each group getting a chance to learn more about the Metro Tunnel project and some of its engineering challenges.  They also completed a hands-on workshop exploring some of the real-world maths involved in large, underground construction projects.

“I enjoyed looking at the top designs at the exhibit, and I liked learning about the metro tunnel project and how they dug those holes.” – Dylan Bui, 10A
