Top Screens Excursion at ACMI

Last Thursday, Year 11 and Year 12 VCE Media students got the opportunity to view ‘Top Screens’, a celebration of the top selected screen works in VCE Media from across the state in 2022.

Last year’s Top Screen’s application process saw over three hundred applications of students' work submitted to be selected for the Top Screens exhibit. After these applications were viewed and assessed by a panel of VCE Media teachers across the state, only fifteen were selected to be part of Top Screen 2023.

Our students were inspired by these amazing productions which ranged from narrative short films, 3d animations, documentaries, music videos and more. This opportunity to see some of the best works across the state provided students with not only inspiration for the development of their own media products, but also to aspire to see their works be selected for 2024.

Following the screening, students got an opportunity to view and interact with the folios that accompanied the productions. Folios are an integral part of Media, particularly in Year 12, so it was a fantastic chance for them to see the detail in these folios to help with the development of their own.

Finally, students got an opportunity to view the ‘Story of the Moving Image’ exhibit at ACMI. The exhibit showcases everything from the history of media, including film, television, print, video games, the movie making process (such as storyboarding), viewing props from famous films, interactive exhibits such as the ‘Editing Line’ (pictured below) and the ‘Foley Room’ (where students record their own sound effects to be added to a short film sequence) and much more.

Overall, it was a fantastic experience for our VCE Media students, and we can’t wait to see what they produce for their media productions, both this year and next.
