A special alumni interview from one our science teachers and the college Higher Abilities Learning Specialist, Mr.Huynh.

Mr.Huynh graduated from Springvale Secondary (one of Keysborough College’s founding schools). We interviewed him to see why after all this time, he’s chosen to return to Keysborough College!

Were there any teachers who inspired you to pursue a career in education?

Of course, my Year 12 English Teacher Ms Vlassopoulos, and also  Ms Tsantilas and Ms Kouridakis.

What made you want to become a teacher?

I was inspired by other teachers.

Why did you choose to teach at Keysborough?

Nice school, nice kids, nice community.

What things have changed in teaching methods compared to your time learning here and now teaching?

We use a lot more technology these days. Didn’t have Edrolo back then and Youtube was very slow.  A lot more interactive with Kahoots and quizzes nowadays.

Is there anything you would change about how subjects are taught?

It’s good that we have more technology like online resources and laser machines. We use to have to read books so the library was a big thing when we were researching. The internet wasn’t that big back then. It’s much better now in order to type up essays and things. Interactivity with online tools like google slides, google drive, makes sharing things easier

Do you teach the subjects that you wanted to teach or studied?

Yes. English was my strongest subject. But science is more hands on so I thought it might be more interesting to teach.

A special alumni interview from one our education support staff, Mr.Ngov.

Mr Kimleng Ngov, an alum of Keysborough College Class of 2019, returned last year to work as an education support staff helping fellow students in Acacia Campus. He came back as he wanted to help students not only academically, but also with personal experience so they can better prepare themselves in their studies. Moreover, working in a school environment allows him to gain experience which can help him develop personally.

During his time at Keysborough College as a student, his favourite aspect of the school was the support given by all his teachers. In Year 12, he remembered when every student seemed to be nervous for the exams, but every teacher worked their hearts out to make sure all students were properly supported with both their studies and mental health.

Over the past few years, there have been a few renovations around the school that Mr Ngov has noticed. This brought out lots of new facilities to support students in their learning. Furthermore, he observed a stronger sense of unity amongst the students as they strive for success.

Coming back to work at the school, he now appreciates the work culture the school has. He has felt connected and part of the team since his first day. Both the students and staff have supported and encouraged him in transitioning to the school’s atmosphere. He felt awkward the first few weeks when meeting teachers who had taught him, but that brought back many fun memories especially when coming back was unexpected.
