Senior Unit - 5/6

Dear Parents and Carers,

What a couple of weeks it’s been for our Senior students! They had a great time on Canberra Camp and learned so much about Australia and how our government works.

A really massive THANK YOU to the parents Michael, Mick, Luke, Nadine, Kelly and Erin that volunteered their time. We couldn’t have done this without you! Also a massive thank you to Nathan Spilsted for organising everything for camp.

Here’s some highlights from our Year 5/6 students about the Canberra Camp:

My favourite thing at camp was Questacon because of all the interactive activities and games. Also there were lots of things to watch like every fifteen minutes there was lightning or the light chamber. - Alex

My highlight from camp was Questacon because it was really fun and cool how there were so many things to do and look at. I liked the robots but they were kind of creepy. There were a lot of things to play with as well. I liked how there were a lot of things you could do and touch. It put a smile on a lot of peoples faces. Very interesting. - Zaidee

My favourite thing about camp was Questacon because it had the fun things like the 6.7 metres high slide and the speed throwing. It was the best place for me. - Will

My favourite thing on camp was Questacon because it was very interesting and fun with alot of science. The interesting parts were the science activities, for example how tornadoes are made and uncontrolled Robots, and the fun parts were the drop slide and the earthquake platform. That's my highlight from camp. - Charlie

My favourite part of camp was the Royal Australian Mint, we got a tour around the HUGE building. I really liked learning about all the coins that were used in the past. I also liked minting a coin, the theme of the coin was creatures of the deep. - Grace

I enjoyed going to Parliament and the old Parliament house because it really has a lot of history to it which got me interested! I also enjoyed Questacon because it had a lot of activities and fun games, illusions etc. My favourite thing on camp was probably doing rituals in my cabin with my roommates for good luck for the next big day coming up to see parliament etc, and sleeping. Canberra is yet the best school camp trip I've ever gone to, out of all the other camps I’ve been at. - Damey

My highlight at camp was the free fall slide at Questacon because when I was sliding down it felt like I was falling. The slide was like the letter J because it was steep at the top and then a curve down the bottom. Although it was a very small slide, I liked it the most at camp. The whole of Questacon was also very fun. -Martha

A highlight from camp is the bus ride because we had a lot of fun talking to mates and I was off my feet for 8 hours, but sadly, I didn't sleep on the bus. My favourite thing at camp was Questacon because I got three sticky balls and a pen and some jumpy things. I enjoyed playing at Questacon with all the little games. - Rohan

One of my favourite things on camp was the National Art Gallery because I thought it was going to be pretty boring but it was really fun and cool learning about the art and the artist. - Mia

Parliament and Civics Education Rebate

Our Year 5/6 students went on camp to Canberra which involved an education tour of our national capital. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the camp the Australian Government contributed funding of $45 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the camp and was factored into the cost of sending your child to Canberra.
