Year 7 to 10 Outdoor Education Camp wrap

Last week students in Year 7-10 attended Outdoor Education camps at a variety of locations. This time of year is always a highlight of the school calendar. Outdoor learning provides a large range of experiences for our students which encourages them to develop skills in team work, communication and the development of an adventurous spirit. Students can become more self-reliant and interdependent whilst managing personal risk in a safe way.

This year, our Year 7 students attended camp at Garapine, Year 8 at Moogerah Lake, Year 9 at Booloumba Lake and Year 10 at Emu Gully Adventure Camp at Helidon. The Outdoor Education program aims to progressively challenge each cohort by providing a range of experiences each year.

Here are some highlights shared by our students and teachers:

"The highlight for the boys was to learn to listen to each other when problem solving, e.g. the whale watching exercise. It was a lesson that not all can be leaders and at times the best response is to listen to the ideas of others and respectfully communicate any differences of opinion. This is where the ‘magic’ of outdoor experiential learning comes into its own."

Mr Jon Woods (Year 7 Teacher)

"The Year 7 camp provided students with activities that were new and offered many opportunities to learn different challenges in the great outdoors.

Making their own Billy Cart was one such example. The fact that the students had to make a Billy Cart from scratch and as part of a team before being able to ride the finished product down the hillside. The excitement on the faces of the students riding their self-built cart was clear as they tried to achieve the fastest time. The activity then had students pulling the Billy Cart apart for another group to use, all while learning how to use tools such as wrenches and screw drivers."

Mrs Sam Lennon (Year 7 Teacher)

"My highlight of camp was hiking and canoeing because everyone worked as a team. Hiking was a challenging and fun experience as we had to find our way through all the trees and bushes to our destination. Canoeing was also a fun experience as we got to enjoy the silence, with still water underneath us, calming everyone down from the hike."

Ava Luk Year 8 Camp

"My most memorable experience on camp occurred on the second night during debrief when we all turned off our headlights and I saw an ocean of constellations overhead. There were also shooting stars! I loved sharing these unique experiences with my friends."

Hannah Green Year 9 Camp

"There were 3 top highlights from camp which included tunnel rats, mud hike and the night walk. Each of these activities was different to previous camps, they were challenging, and they allowed me to be myself in a way that won't feel judged by others. It also allowed me to help/talk to those who I might usually not interact with."

Caitlin Southwell Year 10 Camp

We thank all the students and staff for making our Outdoor Education camps so successful this year and look forward to continuing this important aspect of the Clayfield experience in 2024.
