ORMOND P.S.
HOUSE CROSS COUNTRY
Our annual House Cross Country Carnival unfortunately had to be cancelled on Wednesday due to the rain and dangerous running conditions.
It is unlikely at this stage that we will be able to find a suitable date to run the event before the District Cross Country Carnival.
A trial for all Year 4-6 will be held on Tuesday 4th April. This trial will be held on the Ormond P.S. oval. Students are to meet Mr. Pannam at 8.25 sharp. The top eight boys and girls students from each age group will represent the school at the District Carnival in May.
Year 3 News
This coming Monday 3rd April the Grade 3 are off to the Melbourne Museum. The students will be visiting The First Peoples exhibition at the musuem. This exhibition celebrates history, culture and achievements of Victorian Indigineous People. Through the voices of our Korrie Community, stories are told from the time of creation.
Year 4 News
The weather could not have been more perfect for hopping aboard the Polly Woodside, Melbourne’s Tall ship museum. All hands were on deck (and below) to swab the decks, ring the bell, fix the rigging and haul ropes. When ashore, students took the opportunity to put into practice their data collecting and analysis skills by carrying out an observation survey of the people who passed through the park at South Wharf. We would like to thank Yvette Still for volunteering her time to come with us! We always appreciate parent participation on these days.
Year 5 News
Pi Day Competition!
Year 5 students put their memory to the test on Pi Day, with a competition to see who could remember the most digits of Pi.
The competition was opened up to Year 6 students with Tate our School Captain acting as the judge on the day. Fifteen students battled it out and gave it their all.
The incredible 2022 Pi record by Geroge Svezhentsev (101 digits) was smashed this year by Flynn Suo in 5B who managed to recite an amazing 135 decimal points!!!
Flynn now holds the Ormond school record... and a delicious hot meat pie.
Congratulations to all the competitors.
1st Place - Flynn Suo (5B)
2nd Place - Scarlett Qin (5A)
3rd Place - Annabelle Robbie (5A)
4th Place - Tasha Davidson (6C)
5th Place - Abigail Spencer (5A)
6th Place - Lola Strydom (5B)
Quotes from participants:
"If you try to learn too many things you might forget the digits you have already learnt", Annabelle.
"I felt nervous because there were so many people watching me", Abigail.
"I found patterns in the syllables, and it took me a long time to learn. My PB is 140. When I passed 100 digits I felt relieved and not so nervous", Flynn.
"I got nervous halfway through, but it was really fun", Scarlett.
In the past few weeks Year 5 students have undertaken their NAPLAN tests in Reading, Writing, Language Conventions and Mathematics. The students were well prepared, having had opportunities to practice online using the government's NAPLAN Public website.
It was pleasing to see the effort and positive attitude that the students had towards the testing. The students showed wonderful creativity in their writing, based on the stimulus about a key.
Students comments:
'It isn't that scary and you get to play games afterwards' - Livia (5A)
'I enjoyed how with the writing it encouraged me to push myself to the limit and I got my ideas onto the paper slowly but surely. It turned into an amazing story!' - Holly (5B)
'NAPLAN isn't as hard as I thought it would be' - Scarlett H (5A)
'You get plenty of time' - Jordan (5A)
'I liked pushing myself to think more' - Sophie (5A)
We are very proud of all our Year 5 students!
Steam News
It has been a busy term in the STEAM so far! Here is a glimpse of what students have been working on.
Foundation students had some fun mixing different liquids to create chemical reactions and they also got to program the Blue Bots to move forwards and backwards to certain places in the room.
Year 1 students have made back scratches after reading ‘Big Smelly Bear’ and they have created a ‘magnificent thing’ out of recycled materials.
Year 2 students used a range of materials to create their own hats after listening to, ‘Happy Birthday Madam Chapeau’. They have also been creating different mixtures and have made crystals using borax and they made colourful lava lamps.
Year 3 students have used different paper folding techniques and have made their names in 3D. They have also conducted an experiment to see how heat impacts an ice cube and what is the fastest way to melt it; the sun, the warmth of our hands, a hairdryer or a paper towel? They are currently making solar ovens to melt a chocolate button.
Year 4 students are currently designing and building playgrounds out of a range of natural and processed materials. They will be showing these to all the school next term.
Year 5 students are also coming to the end of designing and building tree houses and they are also looking forward to show casing these to the whole school next term.
Year 6 students designed and created shoes this term and are currently reflecting on the design process, and what they would do differently next time if they had to complete this activity again. Some of the shoes will be on display in the library and in the STEAM room.
