Classroom News - Year 6

English

This term Year 6 are studying the work of Gary Crew and in particular his books The Watertower and Beneath the Surface. We are also looking at biographies and will be incorporating this into our RE work on Mary as we look at biographies of other influential women.

We are also developing our public speaking skills this term and to kick it off we had a game of verbal ping pong to go over the positives and negatives of heading to Canberra for Year 6 camp.

Science

At the end of last term students designed and made toys that incorporated a circuit or made Rube Goldberg machines as the culmination of their unit on energy. In the sea of wires, motors, batteries, switches, foam and wheels the students were able to successfully demonstrate the skills and knowledge they gained in their designs. Some of the designs included rotating merri-go-rounds, speedboats and helicopters.

This term we are investigating matter and applying this to the making of ice-cream. Ask your child what they know about solids, liquids and gases. Students are busy dreaming up flavours that could be shortlisted as the product they make. However, be warned... If your child becomes persistent in asking to buy ice cream of different flavours, it may be because of the market research they are learning to do at the moment! What flavour is your favourite? Share this with your child to form part of their market research surveys.

Maths

This term we are currently working to develop our understanding of fractions, decimals and percentages. To begin, we are exploring the concept of fractions and have spent time finding the various ways that fractions can be represented moving on to fractions that are equivalent.

We are also experimenting with group work and skill stations in Maths lessons, allowing content to be more closely differentiated to learn the skills and concepts that we need! Ask your child how they are going in Maths T.I.M.E. (T - Test yourself; I Independent work; M Meet with the teacher; E Explore the concept/ skill).

RE

Term 2's Religion unit explored the sacredness of the Bible. Students final learning task was to design a Bible Touch and Feel picture book that teaches young people 'What is the Bible'. Students spent a day in Week 1 finalising their books that they had designed to be able to then used with Kindergarten students. At the beginning of Week 2 we headed down to share our work with our kinder buddies. It was wonderful to see the joy on the Year 6 faces, watching their buddies touch, poke, scratch and open their little creations! Kindergarten had such a wonderful time, as we stayed and read several books with them!

Parent-Teacher Conferences

Our Booking pages for the Parent Teacher Conferences next week (Mon, Tues and Wed) are now open, hence you are able to log in to Compass and make a time to see us. Time slots are during the school day and will be conducted via Zoom. Once you have made your booking, we will send you an invitation to the Zoom meeting.

We look forward to meeting with you (virtually!) to discuss the successes your child achieved and some goals that we can pursue for the remainder of the school year.
