New Trade Taster Program to be offered in 2021

I am pleased to announce that the college will be able to offer a Future Trade Taster Program to students in our year 10 Senior School.  We have entered into a partnership with Outer Northern Trade Training Centre (ONTTC) to secure places that provide our students with access to this highly engaging and highly sort after program.

The aim of the program is to introduce Year 10 students to a range of ‘hands on’ trade learning experiences aligned with the national trade qualifications to prepare them to make more informed decisions. The program will expose students to the benefits and enable them to explore their suitability to undertake a course pathway into a Trade via the Victorian Certificate in Applied Learning  (VCAL) which the college will offer to our year 11 cohort in 2022.

The Program will involve offering students a program one day a week where they travel to ONTTC to undertake the training in the following areas:

  1. Building and Construction
  2. Plumbing
  3. Automotive
  4. Electrotechnology
  5. General site safety

The students will all undertake each trade area for a block of 8 weeks with all students moving through the 4 trade areas.

Trade Taster - student outcomes:

The Students will be exposed to full range of VET courses offered at ONTTC and the associated courses and career pathways. The program includes a strong focus on both independent learning and project based team learning. They will have also complete key modules in the job readiness skills program.

The student will attain the following nationally recognised Units of Competency toward nationally recognised qualifications in addition to the completing their year 10 studies at Edgars Creek Secondary College.

  • General Site Safety- CPCCWHS1001 - Prepare to work safely in the construction industry 6hrs They will have completed a Construction Industry White Card (enabling them access to Construction sites to engage in work experience)

Student entry requirements

  • We have negotiated for our students to have access to this program but the places are still highly competitive.
  • Students must complete an application questionnaire outlining why they want a trade future.
  • Demonstrate high levels of attendance 80% or above.
  • Demonstrate necessary results in English and Math.
  • Commit fully to program with the full support of family to travel to ONTTC in Lalor.

Course Costs

The Course cost is normally $1450 and materials cost of $260.

In order to make the course accessible to our students and families we are excited to announce the establishment of a scholarship program with Whittlesea Local Learning & Employment Network to ensure that our students can undertake this program at reasonable cost. These scholarships will be offered to the successful applicants and will reduce the cost of the course significantly to approx. $450.

How to Apply

Course brochure and applications form will be sent to all current year 10 families in September.

Early access to VCE Course Update

The school is just finalising the students subject selections processes for next year. Once this is complete we will be contacted those students and families who are eligible to apply for the Early Access to VCE study. Only those students who are eligible will be invited to apply. Eligibility is based on following criteria:

  • 90% or above Attendance
  • Teacher judgement identifying the student in top 10% of the cohort
  • Only 25 places are available

The school will only be in a position to offer year 10 students in 2021 the option to undertake a single VCE subject with the school offering Business Management as it links with wide range of course and career pathways. In subsequent years, the school anticipates making early start available to year 10 students across a range of subjects as the school grows.

Yours Sincerely
