BBPS Life

Easy to read version

BBPS Life 12 August

Introduction

Our whole school focus on poetry continues – we thought perhaps the best way to introduce this week’s BBPS Life was with our own poem:

Prep

Our Preps continue to surprise us with their ability to quickly adapt to using technology and learning from home. This week has been all about:

  • Days of the week
  • Maths: Subtraction and “friends of ten”
  • The word of the week: Vet
  • Reading: looking at fiction and non-fiction texts

We asked Prep W: What has been your favourite thing to learn so far this term?

Will A

I like going on Zoom because then I can see my friends.

Xander

I like doing Zoom so I can see all of my friends. We practiced counting and we counted by tens.

Penelope

I liked the under the cup game to learn subtraction.

Mee Joo

I enjoyed doing subtraction bowling. I used dominoes for the pins and my brother’s robots for the ball.

Nikita

I enjoyed the 100 days party. I liked it when we danced.

Poppy

I like Zooms so I can see everyone. We played a game where we had to run and find something to bring to the camera.

Amelia

We did an activity where we had to find things to bring to the camera. I went and got mummy because her name is Sally and her name starts with S.

Amrita

I play card games with my family.

Raffy

We’ve been reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I watched the movie and it was so funny. There is a room and the lake is made of chocolate.

Grades 1 and 2

Grades 1 and 2 have been making a splash with onomatopoeia. This crash-course has really been clicking with them! In Maths, they have been magnifying their knowledge of multiplication. And in writing they have taken off with “Rocket Writing”. Our clever kids have also been making Smart Spelling a key part of their daily routine.

Gah-Yun’s (1A) “Granny Is…” poem

Marta’s (2V) poem about her cousin

Grades 3 and 4

Our grades 3 and 4 have been keeping us laughing with their limericks. In Maths, they have been using multiplication squares as one of three strategies to solve problems when using 2 or 3 digit multipliers. On Wednesday, a live Japanese cooking lesson should have equipped these budding chefs with the skills to help out with dinner at home. We hope you enjoy your Omuraisu (Omelette Rice)!

Lia’s (3R) Lockdown Limerick

Grades 5 and 6

We can’t keep up with our Grade fives and sixes! Taco truck puzzles, long division, smart spelling, business plans, blackout poetry, The Jaberwocky, and book clubs are just a few of the activities our enterprising students have been sinking their teeth into.

Sanjhanna’s (5T) blackout poem

Lola’s (6C) blackout poem

Wellbeing

Many thanks to our Education Support Aide, Gilly, who continues to facilitate Art Therapy for some of our students. Check out the magnificent peg dolls being made. We think they look like they’re all attending a grand ball.

Getting to Know…

Name: Sarah McGaw

Position: 1W Teacher (And we sincerely thank her for joining the BBPS team, particularly during this time, taking over from Kylie White who is on maternity leave)

What is your favourite food?

My husband makes some pretty delicious snitzels so I’d have to say them! But I also love Japanese food… dumplings and edamame are my favourite.

If you could trade places with anyone for a day, who would you choose?

I would love to be a famous singer for a day! Perform at a huge concert and wear fancy clothes and go to some fun parties. I’d also probably swap with anyone in QLD right now just to enjoy some fresh air and to have a coffee out with my friends.

What do you love about working at BBPS?

This is my first term at BBPS and I haven’t even met lots of my class in person yet, so it’s definitely been an interesting start. Having said that, I have never been so supported, welcomed, valued and free to be myself as a teacher. This is a very special community and I feel so lucky to be here.

Who is your favourite sports team?

I lived in Cleveland, Ohio for many years so of course I follow the Cavaliers. In Australia, I am a proud supporter of the Mighty Bombers as my Grandpa played for them in the 1940s.

If you could choose a superpower, what would it be?

I would like to be able to touch any musical instrument and automatically have the power to play it perfectly. I am a budding ukulele and piano player but gee whizz it would be quicker if I was brilliant at them straight away!

What is the kindest thing that someone has done for you?

Being in lock down with a toddler at home has been tricky at times but last week when we were out for a walk and my daughter was having a moment … a stranger walked past and said “You’re doing such a great job, hang in there, it gets easier”. It was such a random act of kindness and I think about it every day.

Getting to know…

Name: Jaime (6C)

Position: School Captain

What Season is your favourite and why?

Summer, because I love the sun and swimming in the pool with my friends and family.

If you could trade places with anyone for a day, who would you choose?

Margot Robbie because I would love to be Harley Quinn for a day.

Please share a favourite memory of BBPS

When I became School Captain it was so much fun and I was so happy!

Who is your favourite sports team?

Geelong

If you could choose a superpower, what would it be?

Time Travel, so I don’t have to live through the coronavirus and I can just skip it all.

What is the kindest thing that someone has done for you?

My friends surprised me with a birthday box that had a lot of things in it. It was very kind of them.
