Kinetic and Potential Energy at Year 8

Year 8 Science students have just begun their final area of study for the year; Energy. The classes have been outside in the sunshine sending elastic bands flying! This activity allowed students to examine the relationship between potential and kinetic energy. The “Claim – Evidence – Reason” model has also been at work, where students have been working on explaining these relationships by referring to data and explaining the outcomes using Science. We found that the more potential energy in a rubber band, the further the rubber band would fly – this is because the elastic potential energy is transferred to kinetic energy. And, energy gets work done!

Unit 3 and 4 Science Examinations

The first of the VCE Science Examinations begin today for our Biology students studying Unit 3 and 4, followed closely by Psychology on Monday 31st of October. Then, there is a small break and we have the Chemistry exam on Tuesday the 8th of November and finally the Physics examination is on Wednesday 9th of November.

From the Science Learning Area we wish our students the very best with all of their Unit 3 and 4 final examinations – we encourage you to review the past examinations and the examiners reports but to also ensure that you look after yourselves over the next few weeks. Although you only have 5 teachers in your final year of school, we all remember you from those early junior years when you were in our Science classes and we look forward to seeing the wonderful things that you can achieve!

SIRE: Science Immersion Research Experience – At GTAC

Victorian students gaining work experience by performing real research

Students in years 9 & 10 in 2023 are invited to contribute to authentic research projects through participation in one of the 4-day Science Immersion Research Experiment (SIRE) programs run by the Gene Technology Access Centre (GTAC) in Parkville, an education and research centre.

Students collaborate with practicing scientists to contribute results that inform the scientist’s research program. Groups of students from schools or individual work experience students can participate in this program.

The infographic below provides an indication of the scope of SIRE projects:
