STATE TRACK & FIELD

Vermont placed 11th overall out of 243 schools which is an outstanding achievement and would not be possible without the commitment of our students to participate in school run training sessions, and of course their own.

Year 7 Girls Softball Team - EMR Winners!

Congratulations to our Year 7 Girls Softball team who won the Eastern Region Finals at Gilbert Park in Knox on Tuesday October 25.

Our Year 7 team are to be commended on their application at training that has resulted in a terrific improvement in their skills and game knowledge. This gave the team a lot of confidence heading into our three games against Balwyn High, South Oakleigh SC and Doncaster East SC.

As a team, the girls batted with discipline and fielded consistently. The team were extremely excited with the outcome of the round robin. Vermont won all three matches and will now progress to the State Finals on November 10th.

Thank you to  Maggie D, Rituja, Maddie P and Georgia H for their assistance in helping coach the Year 7 students at training and in the matches and Mary Pinjo for her assistance on the competition day.

Well done to all team members: Emily A, Parneet B, Naz E, Grace F, Gemma J, Pearl J, Rhea M, Olivia M, Amber S, Amelie S and Jayde E (absent)

EMR Year 7 Girls Basketball

Congratulations to the Year 7 Girls Basketball for a brilliant day out at division. The girls played so well, they were resilient and worked as a team during all 3 games. Some great ball pressure and amazing offensive strategies played off thanks to our training! These girls did a fabulous job and should be all very proud of themselves!

Congratulations to Ruby T, Charlotte C, Aaliyah P, Jayde E, Grace F, Steph O, Amber S and Leilani M.

EMR Year 8 Girls Hockey

It was a(nother) wet day – perfect hockey weather. The fixture was thrown up in the air by the absence of a couple of teams, so we were able to scout the opposition as we watched Ringwood and Balwyn play a scoreless draw. Apparently, Balwyn was the team to beat, but they didn’t look THAT good. So it was with a degree of optimism that we took on Ringwood in the second game. We dominated, spending most of the game in attack. We ended up winning 2-0 and were a little unlucky not to have won by more. This gave us great confidence going into the 3rd game – against Balwyn.

They came out firing and kept us trapped in our defensive half. Our goalie made a series of fantastic saves, but eventually Balwyn scored just before half time. All we needed was a draw to progress to the next round, and in the second half we were able to get the game more on our terms. We had a couple of shots on goal that missed or were saved, and the game finished with us pressing forward again, but we were not able to level the scores. While disappointed that we couldn’t progress, we were extremely happy that we got so close.

EMR Year 8 Girls & Boys Volleyball

On Monday 24th October the Year 8 girls and boys volleyball teams competed in the region round robin. Although we didn’t come out on top, all players involved should be really proud that we progressed one stage further than we did last year! Looking forward to Year 9 volleyball 2023.

Mr Shannon and Ms Glanville

EMR Intermediate Boys Cricket

Wantirna 5/110 off 20 overs. Great bowling by Lachlan W and Luke B at the closing stages.

Vermont 9/106 off 20 overs. Excellent batting by Ben S (28) and fantastic leadership from Tom B.

A terrific effort from the team to make it to an EMR final.

EMR Intermediate Boys Basketball

Well done to the team who competed at the second round of the intermediate boys’ basketball. The day started off with a comprehensive victory over Lilydale with our speed and ability to convert on the break leaving them shocked from the tip-off. It was encouraging to see us win comfortability despite being ice-cold from three.

Our second game was always going to be the toughest game of the day – against Box Hill. Again, we were able to jump them at the start, however the fact that they play together daily was evident. They played a disciplined press that threw the team out of rhythm and lead to some easy baskets. This was the difference in the game as we went down by 10. The boys should take some confidence though, because Box Hill were forced to play a zone for a period of the game. It suggests they felt quite uncomfortable guarding us!

We finished the day with a win that ended up being much closer than it should have been. Camberwell made a late run yet the boys maintained their composure hitting free throws to secure the win.

Box Hill ended up winning the ‘final’ by 20, so the team should be proud of their efforts. It was an absolute pleasure to coach them and basketball at VSC has an exciting future.

Touch Football Gala Day

Senior Girls

We started the day off with minimal training and little knowledge on what we were doing but were optimistic about the day ahead. Our first game against Mt Lilydale Mercy College was a great learning experience to gain an understanding of how talented we really are and how to best showcase our team’s ability. Unfortunately, we came up with a loss but that didn’t stop our team from pushing on. Our second game against Luther A’s came with a similar outcome, probably due to the fact the other team were a much more experienced outfit. Again, we showed great improvements. Our third game against Tintern was much more promising as we battled it out for a draw. Again, improving our skills dramatically. Our fourth and final game against Luther’s B team left us with a huge win and our teams highest score of 4 tries! It was by far our best game all thanks to the support and immense amount of knowledge from Ms Malander. Overall, we had a great day and heaps of fun. Thanks to all the teachers making the day possible!

Year 8 & 10 Boys

The Year 8 & 10 Boys teams had a great day out and should be commended for their on-field efforts. Sportsmanship was at a premium throughout the day. Well done team, looking forward to your next hit out.

Year 9 Boys

The day was a total success with all students learning new skills and tactics for the game of touch football. The learning curve was steep in the first game, going down 5 tries to 0, but with some expert umpiring and tutoring the day got better winning a game in fine fashion against Tintern. We learnt how to move the ball effectively, use the 6 downs to our advantage and use the wingers more. There was some awesome individual brilliance from Usman evading defenders and scoring a solo try, no look passes and teamwork by all. The Year 9 team would like to thank Ms Malander for all the effort of organising the gala day and look forward to future competitions for years to come. The team would also like to thank Mr Gillespie for coaching and guiding us on our touch football journey.

Year 8 Girls

On the 25th of October we were lucky enough to be invited to Luther College to compete in the touch rugby competition. We started off with little knowledge of the game and didn’t really know the rules too well, but we were willing to give it our best shot. We played our first game against one of the 2 Luther teams; it was a bit rusty at the start but once we got our communication up our teamwork improved heaps and we started getting more touches of the ball. But unfortunately, Luther took the win, but we had to keep an optimistic mindset for the rest of our games. Our second game was against another Luther team. We played a better game because we understood the rules and that made us enjoy it much more, we lost that game again, but we kept positive for our next game. Our third game was against the 1st Luther team again and you could tell our skills improved dramatically from the first round to the third. Our 4th game we played against the Luther team we competed against in the second round and the skills and set plays were awesome! Our team started off strong and our teamwork and communication led us to the first try of the day! That try gave our team the confidence boost we needed so we kept on trying and playing well and we got 2 more try’s! That was our best game we played. Thank you to all the teachers that could make this possible. And a special thanks to Miss Malander for training us during the week and Miss Ellard for coaching us on the day! It was overall an amazing day and we all had so much fun.
