Once again, the BSC Art & Design Exhibition delivered surprise and excitement to the many students, families and staff who attended the event.
From ceramics to woodwork, textiles to studio art, there was an amazing array of colourful, inviting, intricate and thought-provoking work on display.

It was great to have the FOMAD Art & Design Exhibition again this year. It is a delightful experience to look at the wide range of Art, Design and Media on show. Setting up the exhibition takes a few days to do and as the displays come together, it is always a huge pleasure to view the beautiful and unique work of the students across all year levels. My sincere thanks and congratulations to all involved in this incredibly special event.

It was so wonderful to see families, friends, teachers, and students huddled around the TV screen at this year’s FOMAD Art & Design Exhibition opening. The audience was captivated by the student storytelling on display in a selection of Year 9, 10 and 11 Media student films; this is a testament to the highly sophisticated storytelling skills of the Media student cohort. In Year 9 Media, students make an “epic battle” with the focus on learning basic story structure and Adobe Premiere Pro editing skills. Year 10 Media complete two video productions, one with a focus on using ‘sound’ to help enhance storytelling, with the theme of ‘my bad day’. Year 11 students undertake a variety of tasks – there were film trailers, genre films and action comedies. Well done to all the students, it was a fabulous, and entertaining, exhibition!

The FOMAD Art & Design Exhibition once again demonstrated the wealth of creative ideas and skill that our students possess. It was fantastic to see the culmination of many weeks of creativity and hard work on display. The exhibition is also a valuable tool for our VCE Head Start program, as 2023 Year 11 and 12 students tour the exhibition, looking not just at finished work but sketchbooks as well. These folios are great examples of the ways students have explored and developed their ideas and techniques before they make their final artworks. The new crop of VCE students were inspired and understandably a little awed by what is ahead!

The FOMAD Art & Design Exhibition was a wonderful evening that displayed the wonderful range of student work completed this year. Many of the wood products were completed just in time for the opening and it was great to be able to include them. The exhibition opening was well attended by the school community. The multiple spaces of the temporary gallery made for a wonderful journey of discovery for the varied work from all year levels. Thanks to Bede Parry and Samuel Sosa Haby for the ambience created from their wonderful guitar playing.

What a big year for Art, Media and Design! This year's VCD students have created a body of work that has exceeded expectations. The Year 9 students worked on a range of drawing techniques and designed their own set of playing cards. The Year 10 students delved into the history of design and created skateboard graphics inspired by the movements Art Nouveau and Psychedelic Design. In Year 11 VCD students created their very own dream house! The Year 12 VCD students finally got a full year back in the classroom and I am so proud of their incredible efforts. FOMAD celebrated a successful end to a big year of hard work, creativity and enthusiasm!

The Year 7 students studying Art in Semester 2 were our ‘guinea pigs’ for a new sculptural unit of work – Plumans! Their task was to combine human features with a plant base. Each student was given a small terracotta pot and worked to create a wire armature, which was then covered with plaster bandage and finally painted. The result was a weird and whimsical garden of beautifully monstrous plants through which the school community was invited to wander. The Year 7 students surpassed our expectations with this unit of work and they should be so proud of the results.
Visitors to the exhibition could vote in our People’s Choice competition for their favourite art or design work. The winners this year were:
Congratulations to both recipients who will receive a pack of art materials donated by Zart Art. In addition, RMIT Sculpture Department donated an award and gave a high commendation to two students who have demonstrated excellence in sculpture. This year, the winners were:
