FOMAD

Film Festival 2022

Emily Doyle

Media Coordinator

On Tuesday 21st November the BSC community celebrated the achievements of Year 12 Media at Cinema Nova in Carlton.

For the past two years we’ve celebrated student work with a digital festival, but there’s nothing quite like the atmosphere of a darkened theatre to create the ultimate cinematic viewing experience.

This year’s program comprised of action comedies, school-based mockumentaries, hilarious spy thrillers and martial arts revenge stories. This was also the first year that the program comprised solely of Year 12 Media students; so strong was the standard of filmmaking produced in VCE Media Units 3 & 4. The sense of fun and comradery amongst the Year 12 class jumped off the screen as many students starred across multiple films. Shout out to James Digney and Kevin Ming Sun who appeared in nine of the twelve films!

In Media, from Years 9 through to Year 12, production work is always underpinned by theoretical areas of study. Media narratives are analysed in a variety of contexts to help students understand how ‘stories’ impact and comment on society. Students then apply this theory to help them become society’s storytellers.

In Year 12, students individually develop, plan, document, cast, film and edit a film of any style or genre between 3-10mins long. This production process is the School Assessed Task (SAT) and contributes significantly to their final study score for Media. What audiences had the pleasure of seeing at the film festival was the practical component of the SAT, and the culmination of many hours of hard work and dedication.

Thank you to the students, staff, friends and families of BSC for coming along to support the creative endeavours of the Year 12 Media class graduates. It was so wonderful to be able to celebrate together again, in person, and watch the films as they were intended to be seen - on the big screen!

Year 12

I've been going to the film festival since Year 7, so it was a real honour to be able to reintroduce the event after such a long break due to Covid. There were so many amazing films, and I'm glad that my peers and I were able to see our hard work pay off on the big screen.

Year 12

Seeing everyone’s short films on the silver screen was spectacular; it was a whole different experience! There was a wide array of movies that were shown, from mockumentary to action to sports comedy, and I’d love to congratulate everyone whose movies were chosen to be shown that night – they made some really good short films!

Teacher

The screening of the VCE media films is one of my favourite school events of the year, and not just because I get to purchase a Nova Cinema vegan choctop! When the lights go down and the first student’s work is projected onto the screen, there is such a buzz of excitement in the audience! It’s wonderful to not only watch all the different films, but to see the students feel so proud that they’ve made it to ‘the big screen’!

It was so lovely to be back at The Nova for the screening of the BSC Film Festival – an event that I’ve always looked forward to and really gives BSC the edge.

Harry Cardamone

Year 11

It was a really enjoyable and successful night - not only for me but for teachers, families and students. It’s such a great opportunity to appreciate student work and recognise the hard work students have put into their film during the year and what they’ve created.

I’m looking forward to making my own film next year and to have my film shown.  I enjoy media as it gives me a chance to show my ideas in a film, as well as to learn how to use a camera and to make a successful film.
