Around the Primary Campus

Kindergarten

There was such a buzz in the classroom as the students experimented creating mazes using Lego.

Mandira, who works in our Outside School Hours Care, explained to the Kinder students about Dashai, a traditional festival in Nepal that lasts 10 days. It’s a celebration of happiness and joy recognising light triumphing over darkness. Seeds are covered for 9 days, they grow pale and golden.

Melanie’s mum, Anne, came and cooked Sticky Rice (xôi mặn) with us. It is a celebration food eaten in Vietnam, the country where Melanie was born. Quail eggs, pork (steamed and wrapped in banana leaves), and ‘pork floss’ is added to the sticky rice. Most of us had never eaten this food before and many students returned for second helpings. Thank you, Anne.

Year 3

Last week, primary students were visited by the very talented crew at Terrapin Puppet Theatre to perform their newest puppetry work, The Paper Escaper.

After discussing the dramatic elements of weight, focus and breath involved in the performance, Year 3 students suggested some puppetry skills that would demonstrate their understanding of these elements. For example, making their puppet appear light, making their puppet show different emotions and making their puppet take different types of breath.

Students watched and followed an instructional video on how to create a puppet out of newspaper, made by one of the Terrapin performers, Scout. After practising the puppetry skills with their handmade puppets, students filmed themselves performing. The resulting short films were very creative and students enjoyed learning about a unique style of Performing Arts.

Year 4

On Thursday 3 November, Year 4 students and staff journeyed to Blue Lagoon Christian Camp, at Dodges Ferry for their Long Day Excursion. We had an early start to the day - arriving at school at 8am so that we could jam-pack our day with lots of activities.

When we arrived at Dodges Ferry, we headed straight to Park Beach, ready for our first activity....surfing! We learnt how to ride the surfboard first, on the comfort of the sand. Then we excitedly headed into the water, each attempting to ride the waves. Some of us were even successful in standing up and riding a few waves into the shore. It was so much fun!

Lunch followed surfing, before we headed out for an fun-filled afternoon of activities onsite. We had a go at indoor rock climbing, crate climbing and the much anticipated ‘Big Dipper’. The air was full of laughs and some nervous screams as we scaled extreme heights. Miss Smith and Mrs Coleman even had a go at the Big Dipper (and it’s safe to say that Miss Smith screamed the ears off everyone!).

We ended the day with some time in the games room and a yummy dinner, before leaving Blue Lagoon in the evening.

The day was filled with joy, laughs and many memorable moments. Miss Smith and Mrs Coleman were so proud of everyone’s enthusiasm, courage and perseverance for every activity and for every moment of the day. Well done, Year 4!

Year 5

Year 5 are studying the Bible.  They have been tasked with retelling scripture stories from one of the 4 Gospels - Matthew, Mark, Luke or John.  To assist their retelling, they are making Scripture Grab Bags which they are filling with information about the setting and characters in the story.
