Curriculum Day

Monday 31st October was a student-free day and an opportunity for our teachers to gather and partake in an array of learning opportunities provided by our Excellence in Teaching and Learning team. The level of staff engagement was outstanding in the workshops with much information shared on best practices in checking for student understanding, success criteria, and assessment and learning for 2023.

A highlight of the day was the Melbourne Cup Morning Tea, coordinated by Luisa Allen, and Cup Sweep by Kirk Dunn. This was a great opportunity for all staff to connect.

Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC)

Introduced in Australia in 1978 as the first Australia-wide mathematics competition for students, the competition has grown and spread internationally, with students in more than 30 countries attempting the same problems. The AMC is a 30-problem competition, run by the Australian Maths Trust, that demonstrates the importance and relevance of mathematics in students' everyday lives.

The practical problems test mathematical thinking and questions are designed to be answered just as quickly with, or without a calculator. The problems get more difficult as the competition progresses and by the end of the test, the questions are challenging for even the most gifted students.

In Term 3, 146 of our best mathematics students across Years 7 - 10 sat the Australian Mathematics Competition. The results are in and we are proud to announce that 26 students achieved a Distinction (top 20%)!

Mathematics Victorian Challenge & Enrichment Games Day- Winners!

On Thursday, the 27th of October, 21 Year 7 & 8 students from DSC participated in the Mathematics Victorian Challenge & Enrichment Games Day. The program challenged the participants in a fun, collaborative, and competitive mathematics-based games day. Students worked in teams of four, applying and developing their mathematical talents and thinking skills. Our students worked with and competed against like-minded students from Balwyn High School and Templestowe College.

Participants played various games, enhancing their problem-solving skills whilst being rewarded through prizes and awards.

Congratulations to all students who participated and to one of our Year 8 teams who won the competition (Sonara, Zoe, Emily and Riley)!
