Careers Day for Year 10 - March 12 errata

We inadvertently published the 2018 date in the last newsletter. Our Year 10 Careers Day will take place on MARCH 12 this year, and we would love to hear from any parents or other community members who would like to participate. The only prerequisite is that you have an interesting careers-related story to tell – and that actually applies to every adult who’s ever worked! National Youth Commission - Have your say

The Inner Northern corridor of Melbourne poses a number of challenges for our community. It’s where we live, so we love it. However, this area also has one of the highest rates of youth unemployment in Melbourne. Northcote High School works with a number of local groups to make sure our students have access to as many opportunities as possible to develop their capacity to plan meaningful pathways and gain the skills and experience they need in order to be able to gain employment when they are ready.

Some of our Year 11 students were interviewed late last year for the National Youth Commission (NYC) into Youth Employment and Transitions, which seeks to bring together the expertise, ideas and experience of young people, and the whole of the Australian community, to build a reform agenda for education, and the preparation and support of young people for work now and into the future.

A Public Hearing for the NYC is being held in Preston on 12-13 March 2019. Young people are invited to register, as is anyone involved with young people - either to make a presentation or attend as an observer. The aim of the public hearings is to provide people with an opportunity to discuss their experiences and ideas on how to address the complex challenges in youth employment and transitions. Public hearings are open to anyone, and the NYC is strongly encouraging people from different ages, backgrounds and experiences to present.

There’s another session in Melbourne CBD on 5-7 March, too. There is a lot of great work happening in the inner north that should be picked up through the NYC Inquiry.

A Career in Policing

Vic Police are currently in the midst of their biggest recruitment drive ever, looking to recruit over 3,000 new Police Officers by 2021. What better time to have a look at what they might be looking for in new recruits. Interestingly, universities are increasingly recognising the same kinds of qualities, so preparing for a specific career, such as police work, can also prepare you for many other pathways.

Victoria Police has four different roles available for students who might be interested in pursuing a career in policing:

Police Officer
Protective Services Officer
Police Custody Officer
Victorian Public Servant

Experience and attributes Victoria Police are looking for

Not every 18 year old will be ready to apply, but those who are gathering life experience whilst they are in high school will be more competitive throughout the recruitment process. We do not require pre-requisite subject selection, however any subjects that develop communication skills, languages and fitness are very useful.

The following suggestions will help younger applicants develop the life experience we expect to see in our applicants.

Part-time work experience in a customer service environment - provides exposure to people of all walks of life and develops communication, teamwork and conflict resolution skills. E.g. working at McDonalds one day a week.
Volunteer experience - develops a sense of community-mindedness and communication skills. E.g. working at the local surf life saving club or community centre.
Sporting club experience - develops teamwork, communication and leadership skills, not to mention the healthy level of fitness that is a requirement of the role.
Overseas travel - provides exposure to other cultures, religions and languages and fosters a sense of independence and assertiveness.

Work Experience for Year 10s

All students in Year 10 are expected to complete a work experience placement in Term 2 (May 13-17 - that’s Week 4). Each student is responsible for identifying a suitable placement, and liaising with employers to organise this. Taking ownership of this process assists young people in developing the skills and habits they will need to gain employment in later life. UCAT replacing UMAT for 2020 entry

Applicants for undergraduate medicine courses from this year will sit the University Clinical Aptitude Test for Australia and New Zealand (UCAT ANZ) instead of the UMAT. The UCAT is a computer-based test sat at testing centres, with a test booking deadline of 17 May 2019 at 11:59pm AEST for the testing period of 1 July – 31 July 2019. International applicants to undergraduate medicine courses will continue to sit the ISAT.
