Bikes at school

With the pleasant summer weather a number of students are riding bikes to school, which is fantastic! Unfortunately, bike thieves are known to operate in the local area, and an unsecured bike, even if on school grounds, is a temptation. The Department of Education does not provide insurance for personal property. Students should ensure that their bikes are properly secured with a good quality lock and we recommend that families check whether their bikes are covered under your home and contents insurance policy. Should a bike be stolen, please notify the school and also report it to the police.
Bike parking is located at the front of the school, behind C6/7 and at the side of the school behind G13/14. Whilst the front and side of the school racks are well used, the racks at the back of the school seem to be less so - please encourage your cyclists to park there if the others are full!
Students should also make sure they allow sufficient time in the mornings for parking and securing their bike.
Bike Safety Tips From Victoria Police
- Always lock your bike. Use a good-quality, combination D-lock.
- Lock it to a fixed object like a parking meter or permanent bike rack.
- Lock it in a visible and well-lit area.
- Secure components and accessories, especially quick-release components such as wheels.
- Be able to identify your bike. Consider engraving your bike with your parents/guardian’s license number (with the letter V for Victoria before it) on the bike. Victoria Police can do this for you.
- Consider insuring your bike and record the serial number usually located on the frame near the pedals.
- Take a clear photograph of your bike and keep it on file – this can assist police if you become a victim of theft.
- Make your bike unappealing to steal by covering over branding
- Report a theft to the school and police
Private property brought to school by students is not insured by the school or covered by school insurance, and it is not the responsibility of the Department of Education and Training if that property is lost, stolen or damaged.
