That is up to the availability and interest of volunteers.

Work Placement
Industry & Enterprise & VCAL WRS
In Unit 1 VCE Industry & Enterprise (which almost all of our Yr 10’s complete) students will be encouraged to complete one but it is possible they may be able to do more. Given that there are approximately 370 students in Year 10, not all students will be able to complete placements at the same time. Instead, we will identify 3 weeks (one in each of the first 3 terms) when particular I & E classes will be scheduled for these placements. Ideally, they’ll take place then with their own class but we understand that this may not always be possible.
- We’ve had about forty students out on placement from Mr Crosbie, Mr Lythgo and Mr Reid’s I & E classes this past week. Students from these classes who weren’t able to during this time will be able to, at alternate times (or holidays), do so by negotiating with their teacher.
- Mr Harris, Mr Townsend & Ms Panella’s classes (6 classes in total) will be attempting to complete theirs in the week of 31st May – 4th June (Term 2)
- Ms Sharma and Ms Li’s classes (4 classes in total) will be attempting to complete theirs in the week of 6th – 10th September (Term 3)
As a school we will be as flexible as we can be to accommodate work placements for our students, sometimes it may be preferable these be in school holidays.
VCAL WRS students work placements will be available in specific blocks but also with the flexibility to individualise dates according to student interest and needs as well as employer opportunity access.
Tues 15th – Fri 25th June is available to Yr 12 VCAL students (Monday is a public holiday)
21st – 25th June (during Unit 1 exam week) is available for Yr 11 VCAL students
4th – 15th October (first 2 weeks of term 4) is available to Yr 12 VCAL students, before they return to finalise end of year formalities.
1st Nov – 11th November (during Unit 2 exams) is available to Yr 11 VCAL students.
** Please note that these dates are subject to change.
Work Placement at GV Health
GV Health is a terrific supporter of our students, supplying placement opportunities for students in a wide range of roles (nursing, allied health, allied health science, building & maintenance, catering & hospitality, business & administration. Unfortunately, at this stage GV Health is unable to commence planning and releasing placement opportunities as they are awaiting official COVID advice from DET and the Department of Health. This affects all schools not just GSSC. The VET Allied Health students however have been given approval to re-commence placements due to the specific nature of their training in the VET course and the relatability of work placements to these.
We will fast-track the release of work placement opportunities at GV Health as soon as we are able, unfortunately this is beyond the control of GV Health and our schools.
Australian Defence Force Work Experience opportunities
Students have diverse vocation interests. Some areas are very difficult to investigate through work placements e.g. psychology, counselling, security, policing. However, the ADF does run a limited work experience program with placements available in Victoria and elsewhere. To investigate these and how to apply follow this link https://bit.ly/3sfegGC
CI Card Training
Construction Induction
The Construction Induction card is the base level OHS qualification needed by students wanting work placement in construction trades (e.g., plumbing, electrical, building). All placements happening on our new school site for example, will require this certification. Many Yr 10’s and 11’s (possibly Yr 9 and 12’s too) will be wanting to do placements with these trades or on the new school site, unless you’ve done this training you won’t be able to. We have already run two CI Card training days and are in the planning to run another (possibly Friday 30th April) at GOTAFE’s Archer Street campus (beside GSSC’s McGuire campus) for any interested students). These days will start before 9am and conclude at 3:30, students will have to find their own way there.
Unfortunately, we have limited places and these will be filled on receipt of applications and payments. Course enrolment forms can be downloaded here:
Please ensure that students complete the ‘USI – Unique Student Identifier step detailed on the form. Students can’t be enrolled in the course without a USI number. Return completed forms to your Campus Careers staff at the same time as paying the $100 required at your campus main office. Places can be filled only with complete and paid applications. Students from across all campuses will be participating. All instruction and supervision will be provided by GOTAFE staff not GSSC staff.
