Literacy

Today the teachers at St Anthony’s joined a revolution.

Recent St Anthony’s NAPLAN results show that we need to improve our students’ writing. This much-needed improvement in writing isn’t something specific to St Anthony’s.

These results have lead me on a journey to find the very best research-based resources to support teachers to deliver exceptional instruction that will ensure an improvement to student writing.

Earlier this term, we received a scholarship to The Writing Revolution. Every Tuesday morning for eight weeks, I meet with educators from all over Australia and New Zealand for a course facilitated by educators in New York to develop my understanding of writing. Today as a whole school staff, I began to share The Writing Revolution. This evidence-based strategy offers students explicit instruction in constructing content-rich, grammatically correct writing.

In addition to The Writing Revolution, St Anthony's year three writing samples were uploaded to an Australian writing study. This study is facilitated by an English-based educational researcher and author, Daisy Christodoulou. We will receive feedback on the writing samples, which will help our teachers measure student growth and target specific areas of need in writing.

As mentioned above, St Anthonys is joining The Writing Revolution, and we are looking forward to seeing the impact this learning has on our student achievement.

As promised at the Reading webinar held earlier this term, please see educational apps that support the teaching of reading and a list of recommended books in primary school.
