From the Primary Classrooms

A snapshot of the learning opportunities across the Primary School highlights the diversity of learning opportunities that students have enjoyed.

Kinder

The Early Years’ space has been a hive of activity with Kinder students enjoying the opportunity to share their favourite rhymes with their Year 4 buddies.

Prep

The post has arrived in Prep with the children receiving fairy letters.  In response, they are relishing the opportunity to respond by writing fairyland descriptions.

Year 1

The Year 1 class is investigating what schools were like as part of their HASS unit as well as designing and creating an animal habitat.

Year 2

The environment has also been a major focus in Year 2 as the students investigate the characteristics of living things, life cycles and habitats.  A tally chart of the amount of times members of the school community enter the Year 2 space, has allowed the students to generate data and explore ways of representing it.

Year 3

Over the last few weeks, the Year 3 students have been researching and presenting information about special days for celebration and commemoration in Australia. These events include celebrations that have originated in other countries such as Diwali and Eid-al-Fitr but have now become part of Australian culture too. The mathematical focus has been thinking about and applying strategies to efficiently add and subtract. For Religion, the students have been learning about Jesus’ teachings prior to His Ascension into Heaven and explored the concept of being a disciple – a follower of Jesus, thereby showing Jesus love by our example to others, through our actions and words.

Year 4

Angle hunts in the yard, investigating magnetic forces in the Science lab as well as designing and constructing bird feeders from recycled materials have been enjoyed by the Year 4 students.  The bird feeders activity is part of the Design and Technology Curriculum, where students had to plan, design and make a creative solution in a sustainable way.

Year 5 White

Welcome to COVID Cove!

COVID Cove is the geo-metro city Year 5 White designed and constructed in Maths to show their understanding of area, perimeter, 2D shapes, 3D shape, nets and volume. Once the students finished their design, they had to plan the city and make sure each section was logically placed. They discovered that the water treatment plant and the jail were the hardest items to place. There was a vote to decide the city’s name, and as you can see, our girls have not lost their sense of humour.

Year 6 Navy

The pace that has been set in 6 Navy since returning from learning remotely has been a lightning speed, and it does not seem that we will be letting up any time soon.   Our art focus has been on Street Art and how the use of this type of art often conjures up stories to be told, messages of support for people within our community, humour and quite often political statements.  We spoke about different street artists around the world, explored street art internationally, nationally and locally and then we looked at different street art around the world depicting COVID-19.  The students were then asked to create their own street art and tell its story.

Another area that we have been focusing on in 6 Navy is sustainability as we dig deep to unpack our unit titled ‘Build for Your Life’.  Here we are exploring exactly what is sustainability, how it is linked to our life and what it would look like if we were taking on the role of an architect in this day and age.  As a class we are researching different figures throughout history who are regarded as the ‘Fathers and Mothers of Sustainability’ in preparation to present our findings to the rest of the class.  The students have explored different aspects of sustainability in terms of the key areas of food, energy, waste, transport and nature.  The culminating performance will be to research, plan, design and construct an eco-village.
