Assistant Principal's Report - Learning

Welcome to 2017!

It has been wonderful to be able to personally welcome so many parents at our recent Year 7, Year 9 and VCE Information evenings.  Parent engagement is a key ingredient to student success and we look forward to meeting with parents at Student Progress interviews in Terms 2 and 3 as well as the important Subject Selection Evening in Term 3 and at the many NCPA, performance evenings, sports and other events that make our College such a rich and diverse learning community.

Celebrating Success in the Class of 2016

At our opening College Assembly on 10 February, Nazareth College proudly honoured our highest achievers in VCE and VCAL from the Class of 2016. Nazareth College is particularly proud that the Class of 2017 VCE results continued to build on the growth of recent years, with increases in the Median Study Score, percentage of scores over 40 and in the number of students receiving ATARs above 90 and above 80.  Nazareth College sits above the state average for the Median Study score, and had an amazing 57% of students with an ATAR above 70 (27% above the state average).

2016 Dux Jessica Lim

In her 2016 College Dux address to the gathered students, staff and guests, Jessica Lim provided advice for the Class of 2017 and all students. Highlights from our Dux's speech included:

  • 'Nazareth College presents us with the freedom to develop our own personal strengths and the opportunity to cultivate and grow our talents.'
  • 'Be willing to push your boundaries and use your gifts to influence others in a positive manner. ...  Most importantly, extend yourself. Take risks.'
  • 'You alone are mostly accountable for your marks and you alone are responsible for whether you achieve your goals. You are the curator and the editor of your life, so you too are responsible for whichever path you take.'
  • 'Be a positive influence and enter each class with a positive mind set. Have enthusiasm, be optimistic and amplify the positive energy of those around you to create a positive learning environment.'

Jessica concluded with wise words that reflect the values she learnt a Nazarene: 'Be persistent, be brave, be confident, be humble and, most importantly, be kind to one another'.

eText updates for iPad Program

We are pleased to report that all Year 7 – 10 students now have full access to the Jacaranda eTexts and online resources through the 'JacPLUS Bookshelf' App and to the Religious Education eText To Know, Worship and Love through the 'KWL Digital: Secondary Series' App.  Teachers have provided login instructions to students to provide this expanded access to the eText resources.  Please note that where parents have not paid for the Campion App (via the 2017 Resource List) these resources will not be available.

Should your child not yet have access, we urge parents to call Campion immediately on 1300 433 982 to ensure that your child’s key learning resources are made available as soon as possible.

Student Learning Progress

We are somehow almost at the halfway mark of Term 1 already, the perfect time for students to reflect on their academic progress in 2017.  A key question for any work done is a simple one: 'Is that your best work?'  For the student who can respond 'Yes', there is a satisfaction in knowing that their learning is on track for a successful 2017.  For the student who is unsure in their response, further questions should be examined, such as: What could I improve? How strictly am I sticking to my study timetable?  How have I prioritised my learning to ensure a successful year?

Staff are likewise reflecting on student learning efforts and achievement and will soon be compiling the Interim Reports, a snapshot of progress to date. The formal Interim Reports will be emailed to parents in the week beginning 27 March. We ask all parents to please ensure that email addresses are kept up-to-date to ensure smooth communication between the College and home.
