Term 1 Report

MMADD Day 2018 was by far the best day at MSJ term 1. I had the honour of hosting the assemblies on MMADD Day and I was completely immersed into the music, art, drama, dance and media shared by the talented girls at MSJ. In the morning assembly we had the pleasure of having Gemma Horbury as our guest speaker. Gemma Horbury was a Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts graduate that now spends her time as a trumpet musician and educator at Lauriston Girls’ School. Her uniqueness and drive started our MMADD Day with a bang. During the day students from Year 8 to Year 11 participated in workshops ranging from iconic soap battles to iconic gaming battles. While the Years 8 to 11 participated in workshops, the Year 7 and Year 12 students perfected their themed performances. In the final assembly we had amazing acts involving media and dance. During the themed performances, it was exciting and inspiring to see all the Year 7 and Year 12 students from each house perform with such positive energy and involvement.  MMADD Day would not have been possible without the amazing help of Ms O’Neill, Ms Anastasi, Mr Meilak, Mr Tresize and our amazing House Leaders. A big congratulations to Kincumber House on their big win against the other Houses.

CAMERON

This year at MSJ, it was decided to change the annual swimming carnival up a little.  Those who volunteered to participate were the only ones who attended. This year, it was held at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre, which gave the event a professional atmosphere. The day was incredible with a   phenomenal number of students signing up and the excitement of the students was evident. Despite being a new environment for many of the students, everyone put in an high level of participation. Irrespective of which house you were in, the girls were extremely encouraging of one another. Having the mascots and chant-off reignited the House spirits. Cameron is one of the two new houses that were brought in at the end of 2016, and although we are the smallest house, we had over ninety participants which turned out to be the most of all Houses. For Cameron, it was well and truly a great start to the year, finishing in first place. As a House Captain, it was incredible to see the enthusiasm of the students  wanting to be involved. Thank you to all of the Cameron students who came and supported their Houses, whether you participated in events or not, it was highly appreciated.

Recognition must go to the Cameron Year Level champions: Isabella Robinson (Yr 7), Bianca Matthews (Yr 9), Charlotte McAnda (Yr 11) and Taneesha Lino (Yr 12).

KINCUMBER

Out of the six Swimming Carnivals I have attended at MSJ, this was surely one of the best. This Swimming Day was different to those of the past, as it consisted on really emphasising the talents of all MSJ swimmers and genuinely pushing house spirit. It was fair to say that there weren’t as many Kincumber girls in comparison to the other Houses participating in events, but those participated gave one hundred percent and Zoe and myself were  proud of all the girls who joined us on such a fun day.  A special thank you to all the students - especially Year 7 students - who empowered their House by chanting the Kincumber House song and cheering their fellow students on. Well done to the amazing spirited students of Kincumber, you should be very proud of yourselves.

MMADD Day is one of our favourite days at MSJ. We are lucky enough to celebrate all the MSJ students many talents regarding music, art, dance, drama and media and a win for Kincumber! Zoe and I were so proud of the effort and excitement that surrounded our Year 12 and Year 7 dance battle versing the other girls of Penola. Thankfully all our hard work and commitment paid off, as Kincumber won overall against all the other very talented dances! However, it wasn’t just about winning for us,  even if we hadn’t won, we would have still be been satisfied with the results of the day as we all created such special bonds within the Year 7 and Year 12 Kincumber group. Zoe and I were thankful to have won such an important day but also to increase our house spirit and encourage others to pursue their love for the Arts.

McCORMACK

The 5 March 2018 was the Year 12 students last swimming day ever and the Year 7 students first time. Whether it was your first or your last swimming carnival, having it this year at the famous MSAC made things memorable for all those who participated.  With only participating students going and having such a professional setting it really made everybody remember what the swimming carnival is about - SWIMMING. Sitting in-house sections, no matter of year level or friendships; gave house spirit the spotlight with lots of loud support and cheers for one another. Whether the students came to swim, take photos, help run the day or be a house mascot, it is clear to say everyone had an enjoyable day at a memorable event. McCormack gave the swimming carnival their all, with over 80 students but in the end, Cameron came out on top and McCormack in second. It is safe to say I am very proud of all the McCormack.

MMADD day 2018 was a certainly the highlight of term one for all students. It was amazing to see all the hard work from Year 12 students and Year 7 really pay off. Additionally, all other year levels really got involved to make up a successful day full of music, art, dance, drama and media. Although, McCormack did not win, our team was over the moon with the results of the day as new bonds were formed between the Year 12 students and Year 7 students that will be cherished forever. MMADD day is not only a day filled with laughing, singing and dancing yet also building strong relationships that will be carried throughout our College years. This was certainly achieved this year and we are very proud of everyone who participated. GO McCORMACK!

PENOLA

Our first house activity for the year was held for the first time at MSAC, which made the day just a little more special. This year, our house swimming day was for those who wished to participate and give themselves the greatest chance to be selected for the SCSA team.  This year was the new look of our carnival which was actually just all about SWIMMING. I would like to thank and congratulate all the students from Penola, who signed up and tried their very best for not only for themselves but their entire House. We may of come in 5th place but that won't stop us from aiming higher and achieving greater results for the rest of the year and into the future.

MMADD Day 2018 was certainly one amazing day for all. It was really great to be able to showcase everyone’s talents through Music, Media, Art, Dance and Drama within the College. This year’s dance was one to look forward to especially for the Year 12 students and Year 7 students as they battled it out against the other houses.

In Penola, we rehearsed once a week and our idea of the dances from this decade were coming together. Everyone worked really well and it was great to see that the Year 12 students and Year 7 students were getting along so well and having fun, through dance. The final battle between Penola and Kincumber showed great energy and talent for both houses. Well done to Kincumber on your win.

I would like to sincerely thank my fellow captain Laura Hegarty and to all those within Penola house for your dedication and enthusiasm over the past weeks; and to Alyssa Staropoli for all her efforts in coordinating the choreography for this day, your hard work made Penola shine on stage.

Thanks for making this another wonderful celebration and one we will remember.

Go Penola!

PROVIDENCE

Students who wanted to participate in the swimming carnival was given the chance to travel to MSAC and represent their house and the school. It was an awesome day with everyone in high spirits getting involved in the swimming and cheering. This was a massive change up from previous years and had a much better atmosphere for everyone involved, as all the attention was on house spirit of all six houses and the competing athletes. There was also fun swimming based trivia and music playing that relates to the houses colour. This was just another way that the day demonstrated competition and House spirit. I would like to thank all staff and students who put in a lot of time
