Ulysses Community Report

July Update

Ulysses has had a fabulous start to term 3, Trent and Chloe have been spending time getting to know students and our wider school community. We are excited to begin using tokens this term as a reward for positive behaviour and have been working together as a community to ensure everyone is feeling safe, happy and ready to learn.

Our Learning

Reading

We have been practicing fluency while reading this term. We are working on changing our voices for dialogue and using punctuation to remind us to take a breath or say something differently.

Writing

This month we have been collecting information to produce information reports in writing. We each chose a topic we knew a lot about already to write about, we drafted and edited our work before publishing using KeyNote. Here are some of our complete information reports:

Maths

In Maths we have been revising the base ten system, looking at naming numbers in the hundreds of thousands as well as decimals and fractions. This week we have begun to work on multiplication and division using arrays and strategies like partitioning for larger problems.

Inquiry

This term we have been having fun exploring our new Inquiry topic Why Earth? We are especially excited to be heading to the Melbourne Museum for an excursion later this term. A big thank you to all students who have already returned their notes!

We have been working in small groups of two or three to collect information on different parts of our Solar System to investigate how the Solar System works and answer some of the questions we had in an information report.

Home Learning

In years 5 and 6 the aim of homework is to build on the concepts of self-discipline, responsibility and initiative to prepare students for secondary school.

Homework tasks will consist of daily independent reading and spelling or unfinished classwork. Next term assignments, essays and research may be sent home.

Students are generally not expected to spend more than 45 minutes per day on homework and no homework tasks will be assigned over the weekends or during the holidays.

Important Notes to Remember

* Doors open at 8:40am and class begins at 8:50am, students who arrive after this time are required to get a late pass from the office.

* Students should be reading nightly with the title and pages read to be recorded in their diaries.

* New spelling words go home each Thursday this term and will still be in student diaries. Students are expected to practise spelling for 10 minutes each night, if you need a list of ideas to practise spelling words feel free to see Bec Thursday afternoons or email through Sentral.

* We are currently working on multiplication and division, practising times tables nightly will be a great support.

*  If you haven't yet purchased an iPad please look into doing so, it is an important learning tool. A list of iPad apps will be sent home shortly, in the meantime please remember to bring iPads charged and ready to go.

Kind regards,

Bec, Trent and Chloe
