Maths Challenge

Maths Challenge

The Maths Department is proudly presenting a weekly “Mathematics Challenge” to every student at Baimbridge College this year.  Three questions will be given to all students at the start of the week. One Junior question will aim at our Year 7/8 students; one Intermediate question will aim at our Year 9/10 students and the other Senior question will aim at our Year 11/12 students. This Maths Challenge is not testing who is the fastest, instead we welcome all attempts and at the end of the week, we randomly pick winners from the ballot. The students and awards will be revealed at the following news bulletin. BC Maths Challenge officially starts in week 2, 3rd of February.

Here's this week's questions so you can see what they are doing:

Junior question - Consecutive numbers are written on five separate cards, one on each card. If the sum of the smallest three numbers is 60, what is the sum of the largest three numbers?

Intermediate question - Each May a farmer plants barley seed and then in October he harvests 12 times the weight of seed planted. From each harvest, he sells 50 tonnes and the rest he keeps as seed for the next year’s crop. This year he has planted enough to harvest 120 tonnes. How many tonnes did he plant last year?

Senior question - If x, x2 and x3 lie on a number line in the order shown below, which of the following could be the value of x?
