CURRICULUM DAY - NO SCHOOL

There will be a Curriculum Day on Friday 9th August. Students are not required at school for this day.

New Lunch Order Provider 6 Week Trial

Using the feedback from the school lunch order survey late last year, the Education Sub-Committee have conducted extensive research into available suppliers that have the potential to meet our school’s unique needs, and align with the Education Department’s recommended nutrition guidelines.

Classroom Cuisine was the supplier that stood out in terms of quality, convenience, variety, freshness and nutritional value. They currently service over 85 schools in Melbourne, including McKinnon and Tucker Road Primary Schools and come highly recommended.

We’ve organised a 6-week TRIAL for Ormond Primary starting Wednesday July 31st.

Please Note: Taste Galore will continue to supply lunch orders on Mondays and Fridays during this time.

To REGISTER your family for the trial or to learn more about the service visit: classroomcuisine.com.au. All ordering and payments are online and can be done in advance. You can trial the new service on any or all Wednesdays during the 6 week period.

A hard copy of the OPS Classroom Cuisine Menu will be sent home with students this week. It is also attached below and will be available in the Front Office.

Please take this opportunity to trial the service and provide us with your valued feedback. A feedback survey will be distributed at the end of the trial period.

Regards,

OPS Education Sub Committee

Ormond's Got Talent

Foundation News

There is always something exciting happening in Foundation, and on Tuesday 30th July we will celebrate our 100th day of school! There is so much learning to celebrate and the children will enjoy a day full of activities. They will even be treated to a surprise visitor on the day to help make the 100th day of school magic! As part of our mathematics program, on the 100th day of school we would like each child to bring 100 items to school to be counted.

On Friday, 2nd August, a chemical scientist from Hands On Science will be visiting so that we can learn even more about materials. In Inquiry sessions, we have been learning to ask questions about materials and their properties, and in what ways they can be changed or used. We have been involved in hands-on activities, identifying materials around our classrooms and practising grouping and sorting.

In Mathematics, the children are investigating that everything has mass. They have been hefting and weighing items to determine which is lighter or heavier. Next we move on to place value, where the children will learn, for example, that 10 singe icy-pole sticks can make one bundle of ten. They will be involved in lots of bundling and recording tasks to reinforce the new learning.

In English, the next two diagraphs are 'ay' in week 2, 'ck' in week 3 and 'ea' and 'ch' in week 4. Digraphs occur when two letters combine to make the one sound. We are beginning to use our Magic 100 - 200 words in our daily writing, with very pleasing results. Continue to encourage your child to read daily and to practise their magic coloured words as often as they can. There are ideas and suggested games on the sheets pasted inside your child’s word book. Remember to upload the books you read onto the Premier’s Reading Challenge site. The reading challenge finishes in September and it would be wonderful if all Foundation students could achieve the challenge. Achievement Certificates from the Premier, Daniel Andrews, will be issued in November to every student who completes the challenge.

Look out for photos of our 100th day of school celebrations in the next newsletter.

Year 5 News

Respectful Relationships

Year 5 students were fortunate to have had three workshops with Kate Wilde last week to assist them in developing skills related to ‘Respectful Relationships’. Replacing ‘technology time’ with alternate activities such as playing board games, and the development and application of  empathy and resilience were some of the major learning intentions. In addition to being great fun, these sessions will hopefully enhance personal development, encourage and strengthen friendships and further define our positive school culture.
