The MicroBit

The MicroBit, released by the BBC in 2016 as a part of their “Make It Digital” campaign, is designed to get young people actively involved in the development and creation of Digital Technologies, rather than just being consumers of products in the market.

So, what is it?

The MicroBit is a miniature codeable computer. It is approximately half the size of a credit card, with a variety of accessories compatible to make an array of devices or tools.

“What tools?” I hear you ask. I will get to that shortly.

Year 7 Digital Technologies students at St. Peter’s College have been learning basic coding, using the MicroBit’s block-coding software. The software is designed to make coding both fun and accessible.

The software makes it possible for students to simply drag and drop the code that they require into the block editor and arrange it as needed. Some of the introductory routines that students have practiced their coding skills on include this “Flashing Heart”.

The fun and games are now over, and students must put their coding and designing skills to good use, to develop tools that can be used by members of the community who have a disability. Already, the plans have been made and the work has begun.

This is a great opportunity for our Year 7 students to understand how their learning can be used in practical ways, and how they can affect real change in theirs and other people’s lives.
