Congratulations to the St. Mary’s Catholic College Choir and to the St. Mary’s String Orchestra who performed so well at the Cairns Eisteddfod. The String Orchestra played very well on Tuesday Night and were awarded 87 points for their performance of “Black Diamond”. Thank you to our string teacher Mr Robert Johnstone.

Our SMCC choir of 70 voices put on the absolute best performance they could muster, receiving the following results:

  • Girls Ensemble: 2nd with 92
  • Modern/Popular Chorus - 1st with 94
  • Australian Chorus - 2nd with 94
  • Sacred Chorus - 2nd with 96
  • Folk Chorus - 1st with 96
  • Chiref Chorus - 2nd with 94

Special Award - Most Outstanding Choral Item of the Eisteddfod -  Folk Chorus - “I’ll Tell My Ma”. This song received thunderous applause, and I believe a standing ovation - that just kept on going. It was an exciting moment for the students. They had worked so hard to coordinate up to 5 parts of singing with three parts of body percussion going alongside it. Now that is BRAIN GYM! Let’s perform it at St. Mary’s Day!

Thank you to all of the students who participated. We trust you enjoyed the experience and are satisfied with your achievements. Once again, We were noted by the Eisteddfod Committee as having excellent manners and being very well behaved.

Thank you to the teachers who helped with choir - Mrs O’Donnell, Mrs Oxford, Mr Oxford and our wonderful accompanist, Mrs Margaret Willis.

Individual Performers: We have had a number of students also competing in individual music items at the Eisteddfod. They all delivered excellent performances, with many of them receiving high placings and wins in their sections.

Kind regards
