Woolworths grant for Murphy's

We are very excited to share that Murphy’s Café has received a Woolworths Junior Landcare Grant to help fund the extension to the children’s garden, luwutina kipli. Two garden beds have already been installed and we will also be adding fruit trees and a greenhouse to the site.

Trees will also be planted and rehomed from the neighbouring St Virgil’s College Junior School site. The garden will have a strong focus on biodiversity.

Congratulations to Phil and all student gardeners!

Antigone

The senior Drama 3 and Theatre Performance 3 classes recently presented Sophocles' classic Greek tragedy, Antigone for audiences at the Moonah Arts Centre.

The play follows Antigone as she fights for justice and the rightful burial of her brother. The timeless themes of political power, gender and justice were explored in our modern, dystopian take on the play.

We asked our audiences to connect the play with our current global experiences and confront our own consciences, considering how our choices and fears influence our world.

The cast rehearsed for three months to bring the production to stage and were supported in the theatre by a talented tech crew.

Thank you to all those who supported our students through attending the production.

Building pathways from school to STEM

Last week, our Year 9/10 STEM students visited the New Bridgewater Bridge Project, where they had the opportunity to view the pre-cast facility and temporary bridge.

Students met with David Sims, General Manager - Victoria and Tasmania at McConnell Dowel, and were inspired to learn about the meaningful training and career pathways for women to pursue in construction and STEM-related industries.

Work experience with Butler McIntyre & Butler

Year 10 Law and Politics students, Ruby Seabourne and Grace Munday (Year 10) have provided the following article, which reflects on their time undertaking work experience at a Hobart-based law firm.

We spent a week, for our Year 10 work experience, with Daniel Zeeman, partner of Butler McIntyre & Butler law firm.

We were fortunate to observe a case that Daniel was litigating at the Supreme Court of Tasmania in Salamanca. It was a civil law defamation case, and it was really interesting to get an insight into the adversarial trial process and what daily life is like for a lawyer in action.

We are so grateful for such an amazing opportunity, and we recommend for any students who are interested in Law to go on this work experience.

Blazers from three generations

Our Year 3 students have put their own artistic spin on the College uniform, designing a ‘limited edition’ school blazer, using the school colours, as part of their History of SMC unit.

The inspiration for the activity came after the class received a visit from St Mary’s alumna, Rebecca Woodhouse (class of 1999) - and mum to Year 3 student, Milla, who showed the students an example of the College blazer across three generations: one was Rebecca's from circa 1990, with the other two belonging to her mum (class of 1972) and grandmother (class of 1947).

The students were enthralled to see how the school uniform has transformed over the years, noticing small changes in detail such as piping, the badges and their meaning, and the braiding used to signify student leadership positions.

Check out some of their unique designs below!
