Principal's Message
Nurture. Innovate. Celebrate.
Dear Students, Parents, Carers and Families
NATIONAL SORRY DAY
On Friday 26th of May Maramba participated in National Sorry Day. This is a special day where we acknowledge the mistreatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders people in Australia’s history.
In our Visual Art sessions, we have talked about the importance of saying sorry and learning from our mistakes. In the middle to upper school, we discussed the stolen generation and how we can help to repair the damage of our past.
Students were then invited to paint an Aboriginal dot painting on a piece of bark that was collected from the grounds in the Dandenong Ranges. Students learnt that Aboriginal dot paintings originated from the Northern Territory. Art teacher, Geoffrey Bardon, noticed members of the community doing amazing artwork in the sand. He encouraged them to paint murals on the school walls and then onto canvases. This began the famous Papunya Tula Art Movement. Most Aboriginal art works hold sacred meanings. Students in the upper school were invited to add symbols to their designs to tell a story. The junior and middle school students were encouraged to create a pattern using dots and lines.
Students used a variety of wooden tools to create the dots with acrylic paint and paint brushes and sponges to block in areas of paint. Finally, paint markers were used to write students names and add extra details.
I am super proud of the student's enthusiasm and standard of work. We definitely have artists in the making!
PREMIER'S READING CHALLENGE
Well done to all our students who have made a great start to the Premier’s Reading Challenge!
Well done to the Mindful Munchkins, Brainy Bees, Persistent Pod, Learning League, Dream Team, and Creative Crew where every student has finished reading at least one Challenge book! These classes will be in the running for the first class to have every student finish the Challenge!
Great to see the following students lead the way in their classroom by completing the most books:
Confident Crew: Gopi
Powerful Pride: Walter
Mindful Munchkins: Jaxon B
Brainy Bees: Leo
Persistent Pod: Shivansh
Hard Working Hive: Toby
Learning League: Liam M and Oliver
Dream Team: Evelyn and Kashika
Talented Team: Sabrina
Creative Crew: Steffy
The Dream Believers: Dean
I wonder if one of these students will end up being the first student in their class to finish the Challenge or the first student to reach 100 books or maybe even our super reader!
Our Weekly Super Reader who has completed the most reading during this week and will receive a certificate at assembly next week is Shivansh.
Our Weekly Super Reading Class this week is Room 11.
I hope you all have a chance to do some reading over the long weekend as you relax!
