School Religious Education Newsletter: Welcome to Term 3!

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Students,

We hope this newsletter finds you in good health and high spirits as we embark on an exciting new term of religious education at our school. Term 3 promises to be a period filled with learning, growth, and meaningful experiences for all our students.

Curriculum Highlights: In Term 3, we will continue our exploration of various religious traditions and deepen our understanding of their core teachings. Our curriculum will encompass a range of topics, including ethics, moral values, sacred texts, and the importance of community service. We encourage students to actively engage in class discussions and take part in activities that promote tolerance, empathy, and respect for different faiths.

Special Events and Celebrations: This term, we have planned several special events and celebrations to enhance the religious education experience. These include visits to Fenhill Aged Care Centre, interfaith dialogues, and opportunities to visit places of worship representing different religions. We believe these events will foster a greater appreciation for diverse cultures and spiritual beliefs, encouraging our students to become global citizens who promote harmony and understanding.

Parent-Teacher Collaboration: We value the partnership between parents, guardians, and teachers in shaping the religious education of our students. We invite you to participate actively in your child's learning journey by attending parent-teacher conferences, joining school committees, and providing feedback on our programs. Together, we can ensure that our students receive a well-rounded and inclusive education that nurtures their spiritual growth.

Year 4s: First Holy Communion/First Eucharist: Joanne Collins will be your contact

Parent Information on Communion

Communion, also known as the Eucharist or the Lord's Supper, is an important sacrament in many Christian traditions. It is a symbolic ritual where believers partake in bread and wine to remember and celebrate the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Provided is an overview of what communion is, its significance, and some practical information you might find helpful as a parent.

  • Meaning and Significance of Communion:
    • Commemoration: Communion is a symbolic reenactment of Jesus' Last Supper with his disciples before his crucifixion.
    • Remembrance: It serves as a way for Christians to remember and honor Jesus' sacrifice and the new covenant he established.
    • Spiritual Nourishment: Believers view the bread and wine (or grape juice) as the body and blood of Christ, providing spiritual nourishment and unity with God.
  • Preparation and Instruction:
    • Classes typically teach children about the significance of communion, its symbolism, and the appropriate manner in which to participate.
    • Children may learn about the story of the Last Supper, the meaning behind the bread and wine, and the importance of reverence and respect during the sacrament.
  • Role of Parents:
    • As a parent, you play a crucial role in helping your child understand the significance of communion.
    • Encourage open conversations about their questions and thoughts regarding communion.
    • Reinforce the teachings and values imparted by your religious community through regular family discussions and practicing faith-based rituals at home.
  • Logistics and Practical Information:
    • Attire: It is customary for participants to dress modestly and respectfully when partaking in communion. Girls traditionally wear white dresses.
    • Allergies and Dietary Restrictions: If your child has any allergies or dietary restrictions, it's important to inform the church in advance so that suitable alternatives can be arranged.
