Grade 5/6 News

Term 2, Week 8

Welcome to the Grade 5/6 News Page. The end of term is fast approaching. Please be mindful of the following events that will occur before the end of the term.

Week 9

Monday - District Athletics (selected students)

Tuesday - Football (selected students)

Wednesday - Movie day

Writing:

During our Writing sessions over Weeks 8 and 9, our students have been focusing on developing an Information Report. We have specifically examined the structure and language features within this text type, and now they are implementing this into their own piece of writing. By the end of Week 9, each student will have published their Information Report, and presented it within their table groups.

Maths:

This week and next, is all about 'angles'! We have developed our knowledge of different types of angles and have learnt to measure and create angles using a protractor. We are extending our learning by looking at 'complementary' and 'supplementary' angles and undertaking a problem-solving activity.

Reading:

By the end of term we will have completed our Reader's Notebook novel 'Midnite - the story of a colonial boy' by Randolph Stow. We have thoroughly enjoyed reading the trials and tribulations of the main character 'Midnite', and have explored our understanding of character, plot and events within the story. This week, we compared language features of different text types, specifically the difference in reading a narrative and information text. Our students learned all about the 'real life' colonial story of 'Moondyne Joe', and the similar stories between 'Midnite' and himself.

Topic and STEAM

Our students are busy putting the final touches on their STEAM projects (Grade 5 - Movie Making and Grade 6 - Robotics). These projects will be presented next week during our final week of Term 2. In Topic, our Museums in Motion is ready for display. Our students have put in an enormous effort in creating their detailed dioramas and sound recordings. Our museum will be open to the lower grades of the school on Friday, Week 8.

BSE Visit

On Wednesday afternoon, we had the pleasure of watching some of the BSE students who are a part of the ACA (Academy of Creative Arts) program. Our Grade 5/6 students watched several students perform in their chosen discipline, including drama, vocalists, instrumentalists, dance and a visual arts portfolio. If any Grade 6 students are interested in looking further into the program, please follow this weblink, https://www.bse.vic.edu.au/academy-of-creative-arts/, for more information. Please note, this program is available to all government high schools in Bendigo, not just students attending BSE.
