Art in Iso Art Competition

Earlier in the year when we were faced with Remote Learning and isolating at home, the Visual Arts Learning Area created the Art in Iso Art Competition. This competition was designed to encourage students to create artworks at home that explored their feelings and experiences in isolation.

We received many creative entries that effectively addressed the theme, which made it difficult for Miss Hoy, Ms Moore and Miss Mitsuda to select the winners. Three highly commended artworks and one overall winner was chosen, with the final selection coming down to creativity, exploration of the theme and use of media and skills.

The three students who have been awarded highly commended are:

Bianca Petsos

Year 7

Bianca’s artwork Connection delivers an engaging commentary on the way Netflix was used as her ‘go to’ for binge watching movies during isolation. She also explores the way technology enabled her to connect with her friends while at home, to combat some of the loneliness that everyone was feeling.

Madison Pruiti

Year 7

Madison’s artwork Vines of Fear uses vines to represent the fear that was constantly generated by the media during the Covid-19 pandemic. The dog in the centre is symbolic of love and comfort, and a reminder that there will always be someone there to help you through tough times.

Mimi Crofts

Year 10

Mimi’s artwork Colourless Mind encapsulates the feeling of loneliness by portraying an emotionless figure to highlight the toll that this new way of life is having on people.

Jasmine Slatter

Year 9

Jasmine’s artwork Nonno Joe expresses her sadness and frustration at being unable to visit her Nonno during lock down. Her charcoal drawing gave her something to focus on during the pandemic and a sense of hope for a time when she would be able to see her Grandfather again.

Congratulations to our highly commended award winners.

The winner of the Art in Iso Art Competition has created a larger than life painting of his dog, Mia. This student comments on how it was great to have Mia around during isolation because she was the one he would go to when he was bored. The painting took exactly 77 days and was worked on throughout the isolation period.

Congratulations to Zac Dewar in Year 10, for winning the Art in Iso Art Competition.

Le petit déjeuner – French breakfast

This term our Year 8 French students have been learning about traditional French dishes and a wide range of vocabulary and expressions for food and drink. They have also learned how to reserve a table in a restaurant and order food from a menu.

To celebrate the students' hard work this term and to put their learning into action, this week they have had the opportunity to order different food and drinks from a breakfast menu in French as well as take part in a range of different food-related activities.

Merci beaucoup to Mme Leckey for all her work in preparing breakfast for the students.

$20 Boss

This week our Year 10 students have been involved in the $20 Boss initiative. In their Pathway Planning classes they have been given the opportunity to plan, budget and market their business idea, then run their business during the week. By the end of the term students will pay back the $20 with a $1 legacy donation (like interest) and will donate any profit to a charity.

Pilgrimage Solidarity Walk

Whilst our students will not be able to visit our partners in India, Timor Leste, Cambodia, and the Northern Territory this year due to COVID-19, they still managed to participate in the Solidarity Walk on Friday 11 September after school. The students committed to walking 10km’s in order to raise much needed funds for the communities that we would be normally visit as Part of our Pilgrimage fundraising. More fundraising initiatives are planned for Term 4.

Cottesloe Coastcare

In Laudato Si’, Pope Francis calls on every person to care for creation and take collective action as the world experiences environmental degradation. Marine and Maritime Studies students have been examining the effects of human impact and coastal erosion on the Western Australian marine environment. Year 12 students worked alongside Cottesloe Coastcare volunteers to protect natural flora and fauna biodiversity and improve environmental resilience. Students replenished degraded areas and removed invasive weeds, while also enjoying their time outdoors alongside peers.

ACC A Division Athletics Carnival

On Wednesday 16 September, our athletics team competed in the ACC A Division Athletics Carnival. This year, the College increased the training sessions for this event from two to three sessions a week for the whole of Term 3 in the lead up to the big day. We welcomed back our specialist coaches for each of the track and field disciplines which our students took full advantage of at our morning sessions.

Sprints                Miss Jessica Pillera and Mr Yagan Williams

Hurdles               Nina Kennedy

Distance             Claire Rechichi

Jumps                 Angus Armstrong

Throws               Tim Lyons and Chris Capretta

As we were the winners of the B Division Carnival last year, our goal was not to win, but instead to hold our position in the A Division Carnival for 2021. It was a very intense competition, but our athletes managed to fight through fatigue and injury and were victorious to achieve this goal. Special acknowledgement must go to all students who stepped up to fill events when others could not. This result was a true team effort that could not have achieved without the endless support, sportsmanship and cheering from all of our team on the day.

The aim for 2021 is to encourage more attendance from our students at our specialist morning training sessions in Term 3. This will help not only secure our position, but increase our chances of becoming a competitive A Division team.

A community ‘for others’

In line with the College Fundraising Policy, funds raised during Term 3 are directed to Mary Ward International Australia and Jesuit Missions.  Both agencies actively support marginalised communities around the globe face marginalisation, poverty or other forms of injustice.  During 2020 they are facing extraordinary demands, due to the pandemic.

Thanks to our generous John XXIII College community, we are able to the $8,707.58, which was raised on John XXIII Day. This year, as well as enjoying a ‘fun’ John XXIII Day, students and staff were particularly aware of their responsibilities towards our sisters and brothers around the world.

Jesuit Mission and Mary Ward International Australia continue to welcome contributions from individuals and communities. Donations are tax-deductible.  Anyone who would like to donate can do so, via the direct links below.

Thank you to Year 9 students for hosting another ‘virtual’ coffee club with residents of Mont Clare Aged Care home via Microsoft Teams.

Due to the pandemic, it has not been possible to continue planned visits, which have been a feature of the Roncalli Service program in Year 9.  Thanks to the commitment and ingenuity of staff at Mont Clare as well as our very own support staff, the College was able to facilitate an activity that goes to the heart of the College charism – being ‘people for others’.
